Vancouver Bike Night Reboot

Original thread: Vancouver Coffee Tuesdays!

This is a reboot of the old Vancouver Coffee Tuesday! There has been some discussion on the original thread (linked above) about starting it back up and it was recommended to start a new thread as there are competing meetups in Portland and other areas, and the original organizers have tapered off a bit.

For the moment, consider this thread to be a Request For Comment -- looking for co-organizer(s) and input!

It's possible there may be a pre-meetup ride some weeks. My schedule is a bit accommodating for such, but I know a lot of people don't have such a luxury. On weeks that a ride is happening, I'll plan on having details posted in this thread (no routes being posted, just meetup location and KSU times) by 9 PM Sunday evening.

For full transparency and so no one is taken by surprise of expectations, I put together some rules. I don't know how other rider meetups are handled, but I rather everyone shows up knowing what's expected versus having a issue arise for sending someone home because they compromised the group's welcome.

Where: Jake's Bar & Grill
Address: 4600 NE St. Johns Rd. Vancouver WA 98661
When: Every Wednesday 6 PM Rain or Shine (winter weather permitting)
Why: Because not all of us are on Facebook and too shy to talk to other riders at the fuel pumps! Not really the second part, kinda. Come hang out, talk with friends, maybe make some new ones. Really, let's socialize a bit and link up with other riders.

Basic rules:

The DO's:
  • Buy something! We're taking up parking lot and human space at the host establishment. Show some gratitude and buy something. (Ask me for recommendations, I've had everything on their menu)
  • Bring your bike! Not mandatory, but if you are more than a fair weather rider, come on two wheels! (I'll be on mine rain or shine) Fair weather riders won't be judged, much
  • Have fun and socialize. We all could use more of both in the second year of this pandemic.
  • Share on social media! I'm not on Facebook and I know a lot of people have moved over there. More visibility on this, the better.
  • Feel free to bring your family! The host establishment has a restaurant side and for this gathering, we can likely have an area cordoned off outside so adults/kids can mingle and not be separated between the restaurant and bar.
  • Follow host establishment rules/regulations, including mask guidelines.

As much as I trust only adults will show up prepared to act like adults, the following apply without exception. Violation of any of The Dont's will receive an invitation to leave and not return.

The DONT'S:
  • Don't piss off our host. No wheelies, excessive revving, burnouts, excessive speed through the parking lot or streets within a block of the establishment, or being generally obnoxious with your gasser/EV. In other words, don't bring the cops with you, or give the cops a reason to hassle us. (If you're a cop by profession, you're welcome to join, just come off duty)
  • Don't be a dumb dumb. Aggression/harassment/recklessness will be dealt with swiftly and harshly.

Elephant in the room named COVID-19 Given we're still dealing with this damn pandemic, wearing a mask is recommended but not required if you are fully vaccinated. This is being brought up to ease concerns for those that may be at risk and encourage a healthy, fun gathering. No proof of vaccination will be required, but as the organizer I trust attendees will follow the honor system and leave the politics at home. We're getting together to have fun, not debate what one's interpretation of science and biology may or may not be.

I will edit this initial post as needed based on comments/suggestions. Further, I do not condone drinking and driving/riding, the location is just a great spot and has a great menu. They have plenty of non-alcoholic beverages on tap and their food is pretty damn good to boot.

I should, by all rights, be able to make it out for the inaugural bike night! Thanks for following up and figuring out the details, brother!

Nice work.

Wow! So many rules! Never seen a bike night that was more than just "Show up here at such and such a place and at this time" I agree that being a dick at the event warrants expulsion, but that usually goes unspoken pretty much at any social gathering. I never saw the point in doing burnouts and engine revving at a coffee shop parking lot bike night or not so I'm not bummed by "The rules" It just looks like a bouncer with multiple black belts is writing them.

I hope your bike night is a success! These can be fun and productive meets. Have fun and be safe out there.

I can see that. It does come across a bit squarish, but I think it could be to the meet's long term benefit. Especially since meet rules are often more of a formality than anything else - like you said, it generally goes unspoken what is acceptable behavior... buuuuut....

...given the kind of dumb shenanigans that happen at car and bike meets these days, I think it helps to set the tone up front with "rules" like these established up front. Especially with it being a new meet being established. There isn't a dedicated core group of responsible regulars to help "police" it, yet, and all kinds of people and potential behavioral issues may come along. If certain kinds of people see up front that nobody wants that crap around, they may avoid it because of all the "squares" and that's great in my book. Go chase social media clout/'gram likes somewhere else, imo.

I like TNC as an example of how a meet should operate - well, how it used to operate, I can't speak to how it is now that most of the OGs are gone, it could be a total shitshow now. I liked how chill it was, regulars were pretty quick to shut down any anti-social behavior.

It has certainly had its fair share of problematic behavior but it had a decent history of being self-policed and generally well regulated by Brady and other OGs. I haven't been to it in years, but I imagine it's still doing an okay job of not causing major problems for the neighborhood since its still going, years later.

My schedule changed recently and I was hoping to show up, however, we're definitely not out of the clear and I think I'll hold off and continue to isolate myself in light of recent surges.

Well maybe I misunderstood the post in hindsight, and it's not going on today, but a buddy and I are here and definitely see no bikes. Well except mine

Nice place, these taco Wednesday tacos are bomb. Looking forward to coming out again when it's actually happening

Now to finish these tacos....

I'm far from a bouncer haha pretty small dude actually. I'm just an ex-employee of the establishment and still friends with one of the partners that owns the business is all unfortunately there were issues with a particular car group that did meetups at this establishment that caused problems, and while I'm likely the only person in my age group that still uses forums, like the original post says -- I anticipate only adults ready to act like adults are going to show up. Having clear expectations also helps and as another poster mentioned, these are simply posted to encourage longevity of the event, not to come off as an a**.

Sorry about that! I started a new job a few weeks ago and last week was my first week fully involved with my team, so was preoccupied with presenting a good impression. I will for sure be there this Wednesday.

After talking with my buddy, he recommended Saturdays as also a promising day for these kind of things. I'm not sure what people's schedules are like, and I know weekends are cherished (they certainly are in my house) so if Saturday would work for a broader group we can move it, otherwise Wednesday it is. Thoughts?

While I can't be there tonight due to prior obligations (I assume the 18th being the Wednesday you said you'd be there) I can still generally make Saturdays too. I'll miss the taco Wednesdays buuuuuut I guess I probably don't NEEEEEEED 400 tacos.

I mean I do, but my riding jacket would prefer I didn't. LOL

Haha everyone needs all the tacos! The riding jackets will just have to accept their fate. No worries on tonight, I'm here out on the patio if anyone else shows up.

Should be talking to my buddy tonight anyways, I think he's wanting to team up and coordinate something a bit bigger based off a brief conversation we had this morning. More to follow on that once I talk with him.
