Carson to Cougar

Did the ride yesterday cause Iíve read a lot about it,thought Iíd give it a try. Was going to be sunny and 81 so off I went. I live in LaCenter and decided to go to Carson to start that way I donít run into late day freeway traffic on the way home. It was an interesting and scenic ride although hard to follow on a paper map. No gps. Cruised through Camas/Washougal and other small burgs with no issues to Carson then headed North. About 45 minutes to an hour of casual riding enjoying the scenery and fending off suicidal critters I came across a group of sport bikers that were stopped with one down.Everyone OK so we chatted a couple minutes then I resumed my trip. 5 miles up from them I made my left turn to head to Cougar. More beautiful landscapes but getting cooler in the tree lined areas. Not cool enough to put on a sweater but just right. Through Cougar I was thinking of stopping at the store but didnít. Should have cause I really like DR Pepper. Tween Cougar and Woodland traffic came to a stop for ďwreck aheadĒ. Not a big delay maybe 10 minutes and many miles. Going past the wreck site there were several WSP cars but no sign of crash. Through to Woodland and I5. Ten minutes later I got home 155 mile round trip. I would call it an OK run but not sure Iíd go again.

The roads have deteriorated over the years up there. It is no longer smooth as glass like it once was. Used to be my "backyard racetrack" The twisty bit from the fish hatchery to the mclellan look out is one of my favorites.

You should try the Klicitat loop next.

I don’t do knee dragging rides. In my 20s I did that but no more. Reread the part where I came across a couple riders down. No thanks. My competition days are over re: Super gas drag racing for about 20 years. Launch a 71Duster, 505ci Hemi, crashbox 4spd 5.38 Dana at 2550# with me in it gave me enough thrills to last a lifetime. Easy 9.90sThe few passes I made on my 83GS 1100E were 10.40s at 135-40. Good enough. At 67 I just like speed limit cruising through the countryside now. Wife’s taking kids and grandkids to Long Beach Washington for a few days and I’m thinking about Hurricane ridge.

I don't "knee drag" either..far from it. I just like twisties where I am not losing a kidney. That is what we are talking about..

I've always like the Cougar to Carson run...you might want to ride another 16 miles up Hwy. 14 from the Carson turn off to hwy. 141 and up to BZ Corner or Trout Lake to Glenwood and back down through the Klickitat Canyon (141 and 142)...I've never met anyone who didn't like that run...

Went up Hurricane Ridge on Monday.
Kids are out of school and families on vacation.

There was a 45 minute wait to enter the park.
The lot at the top was already full.
Were only letting one vehicle enter when one left.
$25 per motorcycle without a pass.

Oh well. The good thing about being retired is I can go when I want meaning during the week when the kids are in school and the workers are at work. Sometime soon though.

I don't know if it was Curve Addict or Feral that took me to G.M.R. in Woodland years ago, but talk about the twistiest bit of hell. You have to be on your game. Up and down super twisty roller coaster. I'm a laid back rider now, so I stay away from that road...excellent road for a good rider on a slow bike like a ninja 250/300/400.

G.M.R. Know what I'm talking 'bout?

Another good ride I like, makes you feel kind of out in the woods, but you are not far from civilization is off 84? going up the backroads of troutdale, through Sandy and towards Estacada and beyond. Sort of reminds me of Mt. Hamilton observatory up from San Jose, CA (the "remote" closeness to civilization). <---you got to try that...look it up, the back side of hammy, to the junction out in the middle of nowhere where there's a bar / watering hole stop...very cool!, continue to Mines road (one lane) and canyon twisties near Carnegie motorcycle park....lots of fun.

If you overheat easily, don't do Klickitat on a HOT day...no *uckin' shade in the desert! FS90 past Cougar is my favorite...lots of trees for shade and cooler temps. that bumpy crap road just before McClellan is fun too, it's deteriorated a bit, so look for POT HOLES /loose gravel just before the high speed run UP to McClellan from Pine Creek Store. I like to stop at the newer Cougar store, get a Daves' bread sammich/chippies/drink for the backpack and have lunch at McClellan all by myself and then stand up and do a 360 and flip the world off, but that's just me...
The Z1000 now has 124,000 miles on it. Judy now rides a nice ice blue FZ07 dyno tuned by Nels…*uck me freddy, that thing rips in the midrange now. WELL worth the money and if she gets a pipe, he re-dynos for free...what's not to like!

Riding keeps you young.

Part of GMR was recently logged and it's like a different road. Better sight lines around the curves.

Please, everybody who rides it, have quiet pipes. Plenty of houses up there and po'd residents can complain to the law, or worse.
