Bad day on Germantown road.

Yesterday I decided to go riding but not sure where. Headed North on 5 thinking about a place to go when I remembered the blogs on here about Germantown road. Decided to go to Longview over to 30 and come in from the north. The last time I was on that road it was about 1979 or 80.I was in my 64 Vette roadster running reasonably fast. Racing nose to tail with a 69 Roadrunner of all things. So riding south I went through Scapoose to Saint Helens and stopped at the Chevron for a fill up. Noticed “event ahead” signs everywhere so I asked the girl at the station what was up. Hood to Coast. Hundreds of cars and people on bikes. Great. They had the road tied up north from St Helens to the Longview bridge. I figured to do Germantown then come back through to St Johns bridge and over to I5. So I ran the road east to west and I must say I really don’t see the attraction. Narrow, rough, blind driveways everywhere, not fun. Thinking about the Hwy30 tie up when I got to the west end of Germantown I got onto West Union then over to 26E. Medium traffic initially but it was 3:30 and that was the moment I realized I Fd Up.Yep,down the hill past the zoo I was engine off coasting through to the east end of the tunnel.Took about an hour and half to get to the Interstate bridge. Forgot that it was Friday and traffic would be grim. Anyway finally got home and am going to reconsider riding into Oregon.Just not worth the trouble. Especially to ride Germantown which was fair at best.

Yeah, when I'm working in Silicon Forest* the last thing I want to do is spend 90 minutes on and off the clutch to go all of 8 miles down 26 to get home in close-in Portland. A man should never have to put his boots down on the freeway. So I figure if it's going to take me that long to get home I should at least enjoy it, so I go this way:

*Apparently named by someone who's only seen it on a map or thinks a "forest" is a light industry desert, logged out generations ago, covered in strip malls and monoculture housing developments.

Dayum...bummer of a ride. Been there, done that. Long story short, I grew up in Beaverton, spent a lot of time driving, pedaling and motorcycling up in the Germantown/Skyline/Barnes road areas from the mid 80's till the late 90's. I've hit a dog on Skyline, mountain biked up forest roads and hiking trails (at night) in Forest Park, basically done it all up there. I don't live in the area anymore, but I haven't been up there since I hit that dog on my Gixxer thou back in '10. I know a lot of West side dudes still ride up there, but to this day, I don't know why. It's fuckin dangerous up there. The population has probably doubled up there since I've been a regular. The amount of cars, SUV's, trucks, bikes (pedal and motor) is more than those roads were designed to handle. No thanks. I want to be an OLD rider someday. And we all know what that means; I didn't become a statistic. IMHO all riders should avoid that area like the plague. Far as west side traffic goes, you have no one to blame but yourself. That 10 square mile area is a nightmare traffic-wise. If you didn't/don't know that, well, you're not payin attention. Live and learn. You want nice roads in Oregon that aren't that far from where you are? Head to Clackamas county. Go to Silver Falls state park. Check out the Mt Angel area. Head to Detroit via Estacada. That's where the good stuff is... any road in Multnomah county sucks, pretty much all in Washington county too. Unless you know the area. Nice roads in the Gaston/Hagg Lake areas.. that's all for now, happy trails out there, y'all... craiger out.

Dude...you should have asked us locals what that route is like currently before that venture!

Germantown WAS the place to ride...it's not now unless you like to go under the speed limit due to driveways/slow cars/ blind corners.

But to ride 26E toward the zoo/tunnel? You are pretty much crazy to do that unless it's midnight to 4am. Any other time and there's always traffic during the day. If you know side routes, you can get around having to go 26E though.
