Without falling asleep on the boring ass roads in between. Maybe next year.

Also, it looks like a Triumph owners group from Portland is doing a meet-up there that weekend too. Don't be too surprised if you see more bikes there than just you.
They'll be at the Best Western. They were there last year the same time of Steve's ride.

It varies, seems to be closer to the ground in the afternoons. I worked outside in the morning and barely noticed it, it was very noticeable after 2PM.

If you're on the edge about the smoke, consider grabbing a particulate mask (hepa or N95, not a plain surgical mask) from a hardware store. I rode around ~6hrs on Labor Day with one under my helmet. It's kind of a hassle with a normal full-face, but if you've got a modular, it's pretty easy. Like a mesh jacket, once you get moving, you'll barely notice it in terms of breathing.

at this late date I had to beat the bushes to find a N95 mask here in Portland..but I managed it...my plan is to head out to Condon tomorrow and try to make it to Baker City on Friday...

I'd suggest making sure you bring with you any tools you need to get access to your air filter, if it's hard to get to. At the end of the day if you've ridden through areas of ashfall, you might want to pull it out and give it a few knocks and/or brush it with a soft brush to get that stuff out. You might even do it at a friendly garage where they'll let you hit it with some compressed air for anything that's really wedged in the folds.

Yesterday while riding around town there was visible ashfall in the air at times. I haven't looked at my air filter yet. But then I probably only rode 10-15 miles in the stuff, not a hundred.

arrgghhh...I thought it a good idea to give my doctor a call and get her opinion on my riding around in unhealthy conditions for 3-4 days..with Sunday being an all day adventure...simply put "No"...we're getting some good air in Portland today so I'm going to enjoy that while it lasts and think of all the good times I'll be missing...aarrgghhh...at least I have some masks should it get really bad here again...
finally..the wife is really happy I'm not going..that makes it all better..no?

I had a great time last year and hope to make the ride in 2018. Decided that due to smoke getting there and back - and perhaps even once there - I am going to skip this year. I scheduled a week of vacation around the Baker City ride so will end up with some day rides around the northwest corner of Oregon and perhaps one over-nigh ride.

Have fun and hope to see folks next year.
