Return to Kamiah - 2020

For the last 9 years we have kicked off the riding season with a weekend overnight ride from Kennewick to Kamiah, Idaho. It was called a Begineer's Ride in past years because we had a least one group that was tailored for new riders or experienced riders wanting to ride a relaxed pace but for most the ride has transitioned to a destination ride with 2-4 groups that ride their own route and pace and some solo riders that elect to meet at the motel in Kamiah.

Many have requested the Kamiah ride to be a 3 day event to have an extra day to take advantage of all the good riding around Kamiah so this year's ride is again scheduled to start on Friday, May 8, with a return on Sunday, May 10. Anyone wishing to join the group on Saturday May 9 is certainly welcome (I will be looking for a volunteer willing to lead a group on Saturday from Kennewick if there is enough interest). We again have a group rate at the Clearwater 12 motel in Kamiah and this year's cost is the same as 2018 .....$59.40 for a single king bed and $70.30 for double queen beds. These costs include tax plus a pretty good continental breakfast and are much less than their normal rates. They are NOT holding a block of rooms for us so everyone needs to make their own reservation to guarantee a room. I would advise making a reservation for May 8 and/or May 9 ASAP if you think you are going, its easy to cancel if your plans change. As of today, every room is available except mine. You can contact the Clearwater 12 on 1-888-935-2826 or 208-935-2671 and tell them you are part of "Steve's Ride" to get the group rate.

Its still a long time until May 8 but I wanted to let everyone know the dates so they can plan accordingly. Follow this thread for updates.

looks like it might be hard to get into the USA if things don't calm down...hopefully they won't be closing state borders either...

Holding this event might be a bit more complicated...it’s hard to tell what the situation in Kamiah will be in May but if the eating establishments and taverns are closed I don’t think anyone will be going.

I'm sure this situation will be resolved by then. We still have a ways to go.
Let's ride baby!

chadams66 Mar 19th 2020 11:27 AM

B.Y.O.B. and TV dinners in the microwave...beer should/could be available at the grocery store...my only real concern would be if the motel stays open...I think in these times of stress..real stress..a ride and seeing the smiling faces of good friends is a perfect way to deal with it all...hey I heard gas will be 99 cents a gallon..what better reason do you need?

Oxblood Mar 19th 2020 11:32 AM

Well, who knows when the border will reopen to travel and tourism. I will likely not make this ride. But there is always Baker City to lok forward to.

feistygirl222 Mar 19th 2020 11:37 AM

I agree

Steve, Chris Kurtz and I still plan on going. We would like to leave with you from Starbucks at 9:00, if that's your plan?

I just talked to the the manager of the motel (prior to reading your post) and was told that while the motel is open the Kamiah bars and taverns are completely closed and the restaurants are take out only, Idaho’s 14 day quarantine for out of state visitors is also still in effect (as is Washington’s Stay At Home Order).

Accordingly, since I am somewhat high risk due to my age, have decided not to fight city hall and have cancelled my motel reservations. Things may change between now and May 8 but I think this year’s ride, at least for me, is a victim of Covid-19.

Ride safe and stay healthy!

My husband and are not going, but plan to do a kamiah trip in early summer if anyone is interested.

According to rebound.idaho.gov Idaho is not reopening bars or restaurants until after June 13th and all visitors are supposed to remain quarantined for 14 days upon entering Idaho. We will not be attending this weekend but may do another trip to Kamiah once everything is for sure open, which is looking like late June at best.

I am planning on doing one later this year... Hopefully early to mid summer...

Well, it was wrong on all three accounts. There was never a 14 day quarantine for people out of state. Other words , it never happened. As far as food and alcohol, they were open but we had to take it out. So the 4 of us that did go had a great time. Probably the best weather we ever had doing this event. Until next year.

Flyboymedic May 11th 2020 06:33 AM

There is a 14 day quarantine for people from outside the state. Clearly you folks chose not to follow it, and I'm sure you're not alone, but please don't spread false information as there's enough of it going around.

For anyone else choosing to go to Idaho, here are the official timelines. Look under the red stage 1 for the current conditions and the 4th bullet point from the top is where you can find the 14 day quarantine criteria.

AGREE! I spent the weekend in Newman Lake, just a few miles from the Idaho border, and the locals here go back and forth to Idaho like the border doesn’t exist....but that doesn’t mean the quarantine doesn’t exist or never happened, it just isn’t being enforced although any LEO probably has the option of enforcing the quarantine against obnoxious out of state visitors.

As for restaurants and bars being closed, my personal opinion is that if the normal dining areas are closed and they are only offering take out, to be consumed outside, then the establishment is closed.

Im glad to hear that the 4 who went to Kamiah still had a good time, it just wasn’t my choice this year.
