WMRRA Cancels Round 1

They have 4 days to secure insurance coverage or Round 1 will be cancelled.

Quoted:

WMRRA Senior Leadership Announcement

ROUND 1 – Pacific Raceways, Kent, WA

---- FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE ---

In September of 2017, we were notified of our then current Insurance provider that WMRRA had been absolved of liability regarding an on-track incident in 2013. This incident resulted in a large monetary claim against WMRRA, and Pacific Raceways. Two weeks prior to our policy renewal date of March 1st 2018, the association was notified that our coverage was not being renewed due to a large arbitration settlement. The settlement was covered under our ‘umbrella’ coverage of Pacific Raceways, during our 2013 race-event. WMRRA had not been notified of the final arbitration agreement, nor was the association’s staff asked for testimony or deposition.
Since that day, the senior WMRRA leadership has desperately searched for insurance coverage for the 2018 race-season, and as of this notice has not been successful in securing coverage. After working with multiple-brokers, and seeking assistance from Pacific Raceways directly, WMRRA is unable to secure or guarantee, proper liability coverage, and we must announce the potential cancellation of Round 1 of the 2018 season, at Pacific Raceways. The official cancelation notification will come out Friday 3/30 if racing insurance cannot be secured by then.
The senior leadership does not make this decision lightly, nor was it made hastily. The association continues to ‘turn over every stone’, with the goal of resolving this situation and securing an insurance partner for the remainder of the 2018 race season.
This unfortunate circumstance was caused by a rider not taking responsibility for their own actions and is not the fault of current or past WMRRA leadership.
Further information will be released as deemed prudent. The NRS program may be impacted if Round 1 is canceled. More details to follow if that scenario becomes a reality.
Questions may be submitted through the rider representative (Rider.rep@wmrra.com), or any of the senior Elective-board members ( President@wmrra.com, 1stvp@wmrra.com, 2ndvp@wmrra.com). Please hold your questions as much as possible to allow us to put maximum effort into insurance research.
Thank you for your understanding.

Hope this gets resolved quickly... Some of the best times of my life have been racing with WMRRA.
Though we are fortunate to still have the option to race with OMRRA, it does not lessen the impact this may have on the local motorcycle racing community.

Never raced, but have been watching races at PR (SIR) since 1982, done 6 trackdays there, seems unfathomable for folks who have been racing there all these years to end up with a potential cancelation this year. How can this be?

I know it's water under the bridge but

what was the accident in 2013 where the rider clearly sued WMRAA/insurance?

Not sure--nobody is being specific, but I'd also like to know.

To paraphrase a good comment I saw elsewhere:

We shouldn't lash out at those suing, but try to educate them on the full ramifications of their actions, perhaps they can mull over, reconsider dragging lawyers into it, not fingering those who provide the venues for us all.
Astair1299 and Kooma like this.

I've only seen rumors and cliff notes of cliff notes, nothing of substance to go off of reliably.

You seem to know more...feel free to share.

The rider didn't sue, his insurance company did to recoup their losses. It's really unfortunate that so many are lighting torches and calling for his blood when he's really innocent in all this.

I guess I missed the pitch forks. But perhaps to disarm the mob someone should tell the story.

Also I’d love to hear from somebody in the insurance industry on how commonly they sue on behalf of a client without that clients permission. Thus far i guess I have been lucky to avoid dealing with issues like this, but it sounds incredibly weird to me.

Perhaps, but did the person accepting a $$$$ settlement never hear the word "subrogation?" He's not blameless in this. Opposite, it's beginning to sound like his repellent ignorance of the process is at least to blame as his greed.
