Anyone going to PIR or ORP this summer?

New to track riding and I have always wanted to ride ORP. I hav ridden PIR once but plan to get to both at least once this year. Looking to meet new people to learn from and shoot the shit with.

Picked up a track dedicated Ď02 GSX-R 750 for my future track day fun. Anyone going to PIR or ORP this summer?-img_9565.jpg

I race a Ninja 300 with OMRRA, and I'm staying up in Redmond for the summer. So hopefully I'll be at PIR once a month and maybe I'll be able to make another ORP day/weekend.

ORP is a lot of fun. It's also a lot of different curves to learn (especially since they tend to switch directions from Sat/Sun). Take it easy your first time out there. You won't set any course records the first session, but you sure can crash trying to. Also, ORP is exercise. The front straight is tiny, and there's basically no back straight. On a big bike, I'd say stick it in 2nd or 3rd and leave it there so you can concentrate on learning the track, looking through the corners, etc.

As for PIR, it's a big flat speedfest. Great for big bikes. Just watch out for turns 3&4, thats where people tend to crash. Find a marshal or instructor and pay real close attention to what they do with those corners. I also highly recommend doing a Friday trackday and then corner working with OMRRA. Free lunch and you get to watch from the second best seat in the house.

If you've got a small bike (650 or under), Oregon Lightweight Moto runs days at Mac Track (it's in McMinville), as well. This is more of the whole exercise thing, but it's really good practice. If you can do Mac Track at speed, PIR will feel like you've got I5 all to yourself.

Redmond, OR, right? Funny, Redmond is my home town. My first track day I have planned is at PIR with MotoCorsa on July 9th.

I hope to get to ORP in September but this is my first year with a track dedicated bike so it will be a balancing act of parts, tires, and entrance fees. Thanks for the tips. Iíll hopefully run into you around a get some more in person at the track or in town.

Yo Bowermad ~ I run ORP 1 or 2 times a year, usually with MotoFit. Love the track and yes, it's a workout but I always have a great time. I also make the trek to The Ridge in Washington when schedules & the stars align, that's a super fun track too.

Yup. Nice little town. Don't go too nuts on parts. Just tires, maybe suspension and a slip-on and spend the rest on riding and/or a riding school. Get aftermarket parts after you've crashed and have to replace the stock bits.

Pretty lucky that the bike has been a track bike since day 1, had GP suspension, all track parts sorted, just turning over if I should put a new set of tires on before my first track day. I have a refresh planned for the bike to put fresh oil/filter in it, along with a new BMC Race filter and spark plugs.

Hey Bower, I'm probably doing the September 8-9 dates at ORP. Have you decided on going?

Yes, Iíll be there both days if my wife doesnít kill me for spending over a grand on track days this year. Otherwise Iíll be there just one of the two.

My first visit to ORP is in two weeks so Iím excited to finally ride the track. I have been watching lots of videos to learn the track and just found out they are running it CCW so I need to start finding those and learning the track in reverse.

I second that. I can only imagine what it'd be like to be in full leathers in mid-90s heat.

So there's 3 of us for Saturday so far... should be fun. I'm getting a new set of Dunlop Q3+ put on. I did a track day with Michelin Pilot Road 4s at PIR on 7/20, and they held up okay except towards the end of the day I had a couple of moments mid-corner. I'm glad it wasn't any hotter that day than it was (mid-80s).

ORP is a hoot. Also, it's exercise. The front straight is really short, even for a 300, and has a blind off-camber at one end. All kinds of interesting turns and elevation changes. And if you're any kind of a target-fixater, it's scary as hell. Motofit and 2Fast both run it CW one day and CCW the next. Makes things even more interesting, and you wear out both sides of your tires. Also, both thighs!

I was hoping to be up there for the next set of TDs, but I crashed Saturday at Portland. I'll probably have the bike in good enough shape, but my leathers have to get repaired since a couple seams busted.

Sorry to hear about the crash... were you there for the track day last Friday? What do you ride on the track?
