Spokane Riders.....Input please!

Because of an increasingly untenable situation brewing in my neighborhood, and the mounting unaffordability of the Portland area, I'm considering relocation to Spokane. So, how close are fun twisties? Help me out. I HATE the idea of leaving the stellar roads of SW Washington & Central Oregon, but it's something I'm forced to consider.

There's lots of fun riding nearby! Mount Spokane has some nice roads right out of spokane, northern idaho just across the boarder has many, White Pine Drive is a favorite of mine, you can start down in Pullman/moscow and it takes you up through the national forrest in idaho and to the southern edge of lake CDA. Really awesome for a long full-day ride.

If you keep heading south from Spokane past pullman you'll find the rattlesnake grade and all that.

All together you might just have to travel a little further for your twisties, but they're here. Certainly a much smaller scene then what you're used to though.

Overall though don't make this decision based on riding...make it based on your life/job and all that. There's certainly enough riding nearby where you won't have to worry.

Spokane is not a bad base, much better than ML, you have tons of incredible riding in the Palouse, Idaho Panhandle, and the NE corner of OR is not that far away. Actual all of Idaho has some epic routes in a day or two of Spokane.

Thanks for the input. I'm retired, don't have to worry about a job. Kevin does and this location provides some opportunity without the same costs as the west side. If I sell my house I can't reasonably afford another place in the area. I don't really want to leave it, but I also don't want to stand by helplessly while the City of Vancouver turns my neighborhood into a total ghetto. Too much to go into now but suffice to say I find that a good reason to get out now if I can. It's all about livability combined with affordability.

If it helps at all.....Spokane is genuinely a nice place to live. It gets crap online but most of it is unfounded. The city has really improved immensely in the last 10 years especially. The location is a joy if you like things outdoors. You can live 20 minutes outside of downtown on 50 acres or live right downtown if you want, tons of living options in all sorts of price ranges.

We do get 4 real seasons here though so you'll have to put up with some snow!

I'm not from Spokane, but every time I'm that way, I always hit Flowery Trail Rd. ;)

ZXtasy Apr 13th 2018 05:09 AM

Mmmmm, Flowery Trail! Las t time I rode it, last year....I had a F&W cop pull over and wave me by so as to not impinge on my enjoyment. God bless him.

Get the book Destination Highways. Though sadly it doesn't include the Flowery Trail (so I added it myself) it does show a lot of great twisties in and around the Spokane area. I've actually been wanting to do long weekend trip just to go ride the roads from Mount Spokane in the North and then some of the others in the south. And got to love the Starbuck Highway just for the name alone.

And you're a reasonably short ride from the best riding there is.......central B.C..

dstevens Apr 13th 2018 03:50 PM

And you are a moderately short but really fun ride away from all things Montana.

There is incredible riding in Western Montana.

SOOOOO.. who wants to ride in spokane.?

Mcjunky Apr 20th 2018 03:06 AM

Spokane sucks.
It's basically a vast wasteland of straight lines and potholes.
The meth addicts are only outnumbered by the racists, I'd be very wary and stay West of the cascades, a utopia of clean living and forward thinking.

lol.. sounds about right. But there are worse areas. I'd like to think im pretty normal. So there are "normal" folks that live here. I feel like we are 10 years behind in growth. I have also been to places in the US that are 20-30 years behind. Some never even leave Spokane so they dont know what they dont know. If you think the west-side is 10. Id give Spokane a 6 or 7. The only good side is homes are priced well, but there is been a incline lately.

I think mcjunky wants to keep Spokane a secret from the liberal wacko's, tech workers, addicts, who have taken over the westside Seattle bubble.
