West and East Mercer Way - Mercer Island

Many of you probably know that Mercer Island has a nice road that goes around the perimeter of the city. Itís a very scenic and well maintained place to enjoy the lush green view with the lake visible through the trees via a winding stretch of road.

While it is a public road, it is a very narrow 2-lane thoroughfare and has many blind corners in certain sections of the road. Many cyclists and joggers use this road that lacks sidewalks. There are also many driveways that branch off from any of the North, West, and East Mercer Way.

As of late, the residents have noticed noticeable uptick in motorcycle and car traffic. What is most disturbing is that there are some bikes/cars that mistake this peaceful residential arterial with a free-for-all track. Apparently some riders are taking these blind corners at a high rate of speed and causing fear and frustration in the area and in local online forums.

Modded-out cars are causing another set of concerns - really loud and recklessly flying through the curves in droves, at all hours of the night. Nuts!

Those who have ridden through either West Mercer Way or East Mercer Way May have noticed large traffic warning signs that read ďSlow Down - Extra Patrol - Share the RoadĒ. These signs were put up in response to MANY complaints by residents. Iíve observed a higher frequency in police presence in the area as well.

Hereís the ask - if you do ride through the area, do so with a healthy dose of respect for the residents and those who are also using the road (pedestrians, cars, cyclists, wildlife, etc). Obey the speed limit (highest posted speed limit is 30mph) and be aware that our bikes can be pretty loud especially when throttling out of a beautifully banked 180 curve with clean blacktop. Letís not wear out their tolerance for out-of-town motorists. Wave to acknowledge pedestiansí presence, give cyclists plenty of room, and be easy with the twist of the wrist; this is not a place to practice cornering - let alone race. Letís do for other as you would have them do to you.

Cheers!

good old Mercer Island..lived there from 1962 to 1970...originally we had one sheriff that patrolled those roads once a day..no traffic...a good friend's dad would give us thrill rides in his Triumph Tr4 on west mercer...they got a real police department late 60's and I got stopped once racing my 80cc 2 stroke Yamaha around west mercer...skated even though I didn't have a license at the time...you could always haul ass around the island...

My brother lives on West Mercer Way. He can attest to the dangers. 40 years ago I used to have a good time riding around, but now it's just too busy.
