Triangle of Fire Three Fort Ride - Sunday, July 31

Ride is this Sunday, 7/31!

Triangle of Fire Three Fort Ride - Sunday, July 31

Triangle of Fire Three Fort Ride - Sunday, July 31

Posting up a ride through Whidbey island and over to the peninsula to visit the three forts that formed the Triangle of Fire. Now state parks, these forts have their cannon trained on the water, keeping the Puget Sound safe from Canadian invasion since the 19th century. If you like military history and/or awesome firepower, these forts and their 10-inch disappearing cannon are worth the visit.

The ride starts in Lynwood, then heads up over Deception Pass, and down to Ft. Casey. From there we will take the Coupeville ferry to Port Townsend to visit Ft. Worden and Ft. Flagler before catching the Kingston-Edmonds ferry back to the mainland. Lunch in Port Townsend (looking for recommendations here).

5 1/2 hours travel time & 160 miles (including ferries).

A Discover Pass will be required to visit the three state parks. Passes may be purchased at an automated pay station at the first park.

Meet at the Arco station, just east of I-5 exit 183. KSU 9:00 am.

Is that a 10-inch cannon in your state park, or are you just happy to see me?

“Fort Flagler is a triplet. It’s one of three military forts — each now a state park — that formed the so-called “Triangle of Fire” whose big guns were meant to protect the entrance to Puget Sound, their construction spurred on by the Spanish-American War of 1898.”

Flagler is awesome, was just there a few weekends ago. Miles of neat trails to wander around and eyeball WWII-era artillery emplacements and bunkers and such.

August would work better for me. I hadn't heard anything about these forts before. Will definitely make the trip later this summer.

Last time I rode through Port Townsend, I pulled in and got some tacos at 'Tacos To Go', which is basically a little taco stand built into the same building as Key City Fish, right by the marina. Link here.

Good tacos, easy parking for motorcycles. You can take the food to go if you want to eat in Fort Worden (I did) or they have a bunch of outdoor tables in the shade.

Sirens has good food and a deck on the third floor overlooking the bay at PT.
Had a Cape Cod Ruben. Fried cod with sauerkraut, sauteed onion and sauce.
Tastes much better than it sounds. Also the shrimp tacos are great.

There's a hot dog shack along the north end of main street.
I get one of those and walk up to the Wooden Boat Museum to poke around and scope the boats.

Excellent sushi at Ichikawa across the street from the PT ferry dock.
11am to 2pm, then closed until 5pm.

Oh, it's Water street on the water. Not Main.

Looks like we're about 5-6 riders at this point.

I'll be doing an additional pickup in Arlington at the Arco across from Denny's, NE corner of exit 208. KSU 9:30.

I should be in for this one as well. One thing I heard is that the Coupeville ferry is reservations only. Can anyone confirm how cycles are treated?
