Syd's Shoe Repair - Two Thumbs Up

So, through a combination of lean angle and crappy technique I managed to put a big bevel through the slider and into the sole of my track boots. Originally I was going to do some sort of kludge home repair with Shoo Goo, epoxy, Fix All, JB Weld, scotch tape, staples and band-aids, but then I had the bright idea of seeking out a shoe repair place.

Some googling later I showed up at Syd's Shoe Repair in Tacoma, as old-school a place as you could wish. He said something along the lines of "Holy Crap!" when he saw the boot, but immediately started showing me how he would fix it and asked me to leave it overnight.

I said I couldn't do so as I had a track day the next day (nice planning on my part), so I would bring it back next week. He said no problem, if you need it today come back in two hours.

I did, the boot is perfectly repaired, and I wore the pair through two days of Superbike School, no problems.

$20 charged to fix it, two hour turnaround time, great service. Go to Syd's if you need any kind of boot or shoe repair.

(I would post before and after pics but I haven't figured out a new photo hosting service since Photobucket dropped their turd into everyone's punch bowl.)

I'm still not set up with a new photo hosting sight, but here's a link to my blog (that I've been ignoring for a while) in case anyone would like to see before & after of the boot:

Once I find a hosting site I'll replace that with an embedded link.

That is very slick. Did he fill it in and glue a piece of sole on?

He showed me how he was going to cut the original sole back to a straight line, fill with some "really tough glue/putty", and use his toughest sole material (he showed me a 12x12 square of sole material from which he cuts new soles).

He said the boot's original sole is very tough, and his new material almost as tough.

It was a good thing I got off my ass to get it done - he showed me how the forward mounting peg for the slider had started to get ground off, and said he wouldn't have been able to fix that if it was gone.
