Skills day and ride 5/20

I'm happy to announce that skills days have returned! After a couple of years of being unable to find a reliable location, we (Eireannach Rothai Riding Club) have finally locked down a parking lot. We ran them intermittently for the last 3 seasons, but Open Door Baptist Church in Lynnwood (17014 44th Ave W, Lynnwood, WA 98037) is now allowing us use of their parking lot on the third Saturday of each month.

We'll be setting up a cones course that will help develop and hone basic riding skills. We will also be offering individual coaching for those interested. This event is ENTIRELY FREE, and all are welcome. Just show up with a bike and whatever gear you wear and we'll get you all set up. We normally have 8-12 members helping out every month. The club consists of a bunch of experienced street riders, with roughly half having held or currently holding active roadracing licenses. I think our average mileage per member is hovering around 200,000, and we've been doing this for almost a decade now, so we're relatively qualified to help most everyone out.

The skills day officially kicks off at 10am, and will run for roughly 2 hours.

Following the skills day, we will be riding to the Mukilteo ferry and heading up Whidbey Island, ultimately winding up at Angel of the Winds Casino (because they sponsor our favorite charity, and have delightful quesadillas). In all, it should be a fun day.

Sounds interesting. Similar to the MSF Advanced Course?

Give or take. To be fair, though, my last interaction with MSF was my BRC in 2006. We run these because our past experience with the MSF is that they're exceptionally good at what they do, but what they do is generally teaching you to operate your bike only in a parking lot. Even my BRC instructor said as much during my time there. We try to give more road-oriented advice and critiques, though there will certainly be similarities.

Same here, actually. "You are now fully qualified to operate a motorcycle in a parking lot under 10 miles an hour."

I'm not up to 200,000 miles yet, but working on it.

Glad to see this back on the schedule. I'll be up near Anacortes in a rock climbing class, or I'd be there in a skinny minute.

The session is not as structured as the ARC, but you can get a lot out of it, at least if you are willing to put something into it.

Don't worry, there's always next month. We have a stable location finally, so we're doing this regularly again.

Well that was fun

Got home about 9 pm with 199.3 mi showing on the trip meter and a BRIGHT RED light in my face saying "feed me!" I couldn't believe how awkward it felt maneuvering around those cones at ten miles an hour. I was thankful to get back out on the road. The parking lot stuff was exhausting, so it felt like I did well over the 250 mi I actually got in.
