The issue may be knowing of an incident which occurred there where someone you know lost their life or it could be the constraints of being in a tunnel with limited options for evasive maneuvers while on a motorcycle or a number of other issues.

I used to work in canada in the summers at my cousins lodge.
One summer my older cousin daryl got knocked out of his boat, and chopped with the prop. We found him a couple weeks later after lots of police and search & rescue efforts.

I'll never forget seeing him underwater.

That said, I kept working there for several more years and was out on the lake in boats daily. You gotta keep on keepin on..

I'm very sorry about your cousin - I can't imagine having to witness anything like that.

Speed limit on the viaduct into the tunnel is suppose to be 40. If traffic's not heavy cars fly by faster than that. 99N kind of curves around before entering the tunnel. The on ramp from Western climbs uphill to 99N and connects just before the tunnel entrance. Climbing up the ramp, its not the easiest to see viaduct traffic until you're near the end. Use to keep my head turned hard left looking for cars and use the right eye's peripheral vision to watch the road. In the winter you can pick up headlights a ways back. For a month or so in the summer its light enough than not all the cars have their headlights on, (commuted on the 4:45 ferry). In the summer I often stood on the pegs for a better view, (especially on the Beemer). When you see a hole punch it, go and merge. Southbound was not as bad, (for me). I would get on 99S at the Aurora bridge. Traffic was always heavy but usually traveling faster than the 40 MPH speed limit. When you get to the tunnel you have to be careful. There's an on ramp from Elliott that connects to 99S at the tunnel exit. There's a curve before maybe 2/3rd of the way through . You can be going 35-40 going into the curve and run into stopped traffic at the other end. After you've done it a few times you know about what to expect and its not all that bad. I worked on the other side of the U-District. You never knew what you were going to see or run into. Some days were an adventure. 20 years ago Seattle traffic was a PITA. Today its a total CF. Fortunately only have to go there a few times a year for doctors appointments, and then I take the cage.

i wonder if there's a natural upper limit to traffic fuckery. at some point the hassle/benefit ratio get's too high and you just choose to not go. #imalreadythere

Well...............You all can just come and "RUN" through the BST this Sunday with the Hot Chocolate 5K or 15K run. It'll be pretty safe...... You might get passed by a speedy runner that's running faster than you, but that's about as bad as it's going to get this Sunday morning.........

If it is bright AT ALL, even the ‘grey’ Seattle days, you cannot see when you drop into the tunnel going North. And it is a drop in. Basically a tight two lane blind narrow RH entrance with almost no shoulders that drops some as you go around the corner. Since it is also a tight two lane that means the cages crowd both sides. It then straightens out for a bit so people can text then does a tight two lane blind narrow LH exit out of the tunnel that has incoming traffic coming on as you get around the corner. All at 40+ mph. So yeah, even though I don’t have a big issue with it I am on ‘high alert’ when I go through.
Playing the ‘What If’ game, if there was a blocking accident just around the corner going North, I am not sure you could get stopped quick enough to avoid it. Not to mention the folks behind slamming into you either way...
Now the Denny tunnel, I like that one! I call ot the ‘bathroom’ tunnel as it is all tiled in yellow. Had a cager pass me (wide single lane) on the outside in that one! Weeeeeee!!!

  In the past.

Don't forget the on-ramp at that blind entry corner and all the side streets where people get off at the other side (North Bound). Northbound I stay left to avoid that mess but you always have someone changing lanes.

Exorcised the ghost

Well, after all these years, I finally did it on Saturday on my ride from SODO to Vallantine Motor Works on 99.
Not nearly as bad as how I've built up the memory of the tunnel (e.g. could have sworn the lanes were narrower, curves quicker, and ankle deep in cager-grease). The last long curve (NB) is eerily blind, but if you're used to passing through it, I suppose you get good at covering the brakes and very ready to dip in more or "standing 'er up".

To all who have thoughtfully given advice, encouragement, and even practical methods to "get over it" - thank you so much. I'll keep hitting the iron while it is hot for a while and take on more opportunities that present themselves in the near future to get used to the tube.
