  In the past.

I ride there on the way to work when I go in. Only once have I had a pucker moment. Some truck had dropped a cement bag some time before I entered and it was on the curve of the entrance. A big cloud of dust and before I could figure anything out a big lump of powder in the middle of lane.

I suggest riding a few times southbound during nightly rush hour. It is walking pace so you get plenty of time to get to know it.

Thanks for chiming in - I'm glad to receive your concern and support.
I like the rush-hour acclimation plan. I'll certainly consider it.

Not gonna like, after 13 years on a 625, the 701 looks sooo badass.

That said, I had 13 years on a street thumper..
This little piggy has caught my eye for a new street terrorizer.

Irrational is different for each person and it can be situational.

True, your defining simple or specific phobias. Below are some bullet points that define our friend Route 264 pretty well, (had to look this up as its been decades since taking those undergrad psych courses).

*A phobia is an exaggerated and irrational fear.
*A specific phobia is an intense, irrational fear of a specific trigger.
*A phobia becomes diagnosable when a person begins organizing their lives around avoiding the cause of their fear.
*Specific phobias should be treated with exposure therapy where the person is introduced to the situation or object in question until the fear resolves.

His phobias trigger is the memory of his good friend dying in a tunnel crash. He arranges his commute so that he avoids the tunnel. No psychoanalysis here but deep down he probably fears the same fate if he rides through it.

The only way he's going to beat it is to start riding through the tunnel. Do some late night weekend runs when there's little traffic and work up from there.

This is pure supposition on my part but if he's being truthful with everything he's outlined then this has been eating at him for a long time. Not good, beat it. If you don't sooner or later you'll start fearing other things.

Oh Iím being truthful alright (no lying about a friendís passing)
I donít commute through there (I work in Swellvue), but when I have to ride Northwest from downtown, Iíll avoid it. Itís not a ďdebilitatingĒ fear - more of a subconscious avoidance or a mental red flag. I do drive through there in my car from time to time (eerie feeling but I get through it and forget it after a few clicks), but go through Belltown on a bike. And like I mentioned, no other stretch of road gives me problems. Just this tunnel.

But youíre absolutely correct - I do change my route of travel even if it adds minutes or miles.

When the weather letís up, Iíll make a conscious effort to ride through - I have to go to Valantine Motor Works on 99 soon. Besides, the forum is probably getting tired of the cheap drama...

Thanks for the concern & research (very kind of you to go above and beyond). Itíd be difficult for me to analyse as you have, being the first person.

  2015 Kawasaki Concours 14 - The Origame Sea-Dragon
A few years ago I was riding my bicycle on Beach Drive in Port Orchard just a few miles from my house. The road is two lanes and 25mph curvy with houses on both sides. I was riding on the fog line doing 25mph (gps). Two inches outboard of the fog line it is ping-pong ball sized gravel and dirt. I hear a truck come up behind me. I checked my speed. Doing the limit. I am as far right as I can go. Ahead is a blind left hand curve. I was going to try and accelerate a little because it begins to go downhill. I hear the engine rev up and get louder. "Shit. He's passing!" The front end comes abreast of me and I can see its a flatbed pickup truck. Around the curve, heading towards us, comes a gold Accord. Truck Man is exactly half-way in each lane and now he has to make a choice. He chooses to run over me rather than head-on the Honda. In retrospect - sure. But - fucker. He jinks right and the edge of the flat-bed hits me in the left hand, tipping me toward my right side. He is passing me, and I am tipping over, in slow motion. I can see everything, hear everything, i can smell his exhaust. His right rear tire runs over the edge of my back tire, pinching it to the road surface, and effectively slowing me from 25mph to 0mph in zero time. I go over the bars, at 25, wearing that dumbass bicycle gear, and hit the gravel on my left shoulder. My left clavicle snaps instantly, right at the spot it broke last time, 20 years ago, when I rolled my Honda ATC250R off a jump and landed, upside down, in the seated position. It was five years before i rode a bicycle on the road again, and a couple more before I went down that road, past that spot. I went there finally as a sort of experiment, an adventure to actually see what it would feel like to do it. I was collecting data. I think that by watching for the emotions to arise I sort of took away their power. When a sketchy feeling popped up I was distracted from it by noticing it and becoming aware of it and watching for its effects on me. So then I knew what was likely to happen, and discovered it wasn't so bad. Then it was just another road, although I am perhaps more aware when I go down there. YMMV.

chadams66, thanks for the info. For the sake of putting this ridiculousness to rest, I should ride through there before it is retired.
