Seattle: Battery Street Tunnel

Ever since I lost a friend on her bike in the tunnel (back in '95), I've never ridden through there. Am I the only one who avoids that tunnel like the plague? I've driven through there in my cage, but still get a spell of nervousness when the pavement is wet and the speed is high; narrow, dark, greasy, and blind...

Can someone chime in to relieve me of the fear of the BST?

u trolling?

yeah man, just smash through there, I used to everyday when I was working in ballard and its not bad ever, I wouldn't worry about it. First bike? First litre bike? Really dude? Do some high speed runs late at night through the I-90 tunnels if nervous, warm em up a bit then hit 99n through to fremont...grab a beer, make a phone call and go home. One and done, if your scared of roads...hate to say it sell bike or do performance school. Knowledge is power and knowing is half the battle....

Commuted through it both ways for 17-1/2 years. Didn't like it but IMO its only a little worst than rush hour street traffic in Seattle.

Don't crowd the vehicle in front of you. Check the mirrors and make sure the guy in back of you isn't to close. You need to be seen. If you have dark riding gear get a cheap Yellow or Orange reflective vest from WalMart. If you're truly nervous make a couple very late night practice runs through it when the traffic is lighter.

It and the viaduct aren't going to be around much longer. Commuting through the new tunnel probably isn't going to be any better. If you're going to commute through it you need to conquer this phobia.

Sorry about your friend, and I can understand avoiding a place that brings back bad memories like that.

The tunnel itself isn't that bad if you're careful. It's the self-professed "high speed" runs and the blind entrance and exits during traffic times you need to pay attention to. Hey, everybody likes to hear their pipes in a tunnel. Rounding those curves at stupid high speeds will put you in potential trouble. Just slow down. Save it for the track.

Last time I took it was a few months ago, it looked like they were adding a street light about a block north of it. Something to keep in mind as it's a long stretch with no stopping and now there is a possible redlight half way through it. I'd watch your 6.

Hmmm..I almost lost it in there many Moons ago..about 1999. I think it is a death trap tunnel.

I was new to the city and on my first street bike (the 1994 CBR). I can make a statement that traffic was lighter back them. I was traveling from Ballard going back to West Seattle.

I hit the tunnel and twisted the throttle more to let that Vance & Hines pipe scream, I leaned hard left out of the tunnel to immediately hit both lanes of stopped rush hour type traffic.

I was able to stand the bike up, brake with front and rear at the same time, and split the lane avoiding read ending the cars.

I regret never contacting the city to ask to put a corner mirror in that tunnel exit.

I like to wheelie in there when there isn't a ton of traffic.. sounds cool on the superduke.

Right after they ground the surface down it was a shit show on a bike.. they looked like they were going to resurface it (this was like 6-7 years ago).
They never did.. so eventually all the ridges from the grind have mellowed out.

Its not too bad now, just don't get rear-ended.

Thanks for the words of encouragement (well, mostly). It's just as MMcN49 noted - a phobia. It's something that has haunted me since the day I got the news of the passing of a friend. No other stretch of road over the years of riding have bothered me; just THIS one.

I'll work on it - it just may take me a while to be comfortable with it.
Thanks again people!

I have a Bud that was commuting early one morning on his HD in the left lane, entered the tunnel, and had no problem staying awake for the rest of the ride as there was a dresser standing up in the middle of the right lane just around the entrance corner. He said there was no doubt he would have hit it if he had been in the right lane...
Just stay alert and ride it.

If it bothers you, then go around. It may take longer but if you aren't comfortable riding in a situation like that, it's best to avoid it.

I currently do. I know it makes me sound like a wuss, but perhaps best to stay away like you say. Thanks.

Fair enough but a phobia is an irrational fear that should be addressed. If not dealt with others will follow.
