Day Trippin’ to Canada: Motorcycle Museum and Point Bob - Saturday August 6th

Day Trippin’ to Canada: Motorcycle Museum and Point Bob - Saturday August 6th

Did you know that there is an isolated, 5 square mile chunk of the US, just south of Vancouver, BC? Do you like motorcycles? If the answer to either one of these questions is no or yes, hold your calendar open for Saturday August 6th and plan on riding. I’ll be doing a trip up to visit the Deeley motorcycle museum in Vancouver, BC, followed by a run down to Point Roberts, USA!

The route will head from north Seattle up I-5 to Arlington then over to highway 9, and on to the Canadian border, where we will fuel up before crossing at Sumas. Once in glorious Canadia, we will stop for a sandwich and donut lunch* in Maple Ridge (trust me on this one) before heading to the Deeley motorcycle museum in Vancouver. After touring the museum, we’ll head back down to the good ol’ US of A, and do a loop of the 5 square miles of orphaned Washington state south of Tsawwassen known as Point Roberts. (But you can call it Bob.)

While in Point Bob, we’ll visit border marker #1, then see what else we can amuse ourselves with on our loop through. On the way out, we’ll play Canadian and take advantage of dirt cheap WA state gas prices, fueling up again before we leave American soil.

Leaving Point Roberts, we’ll cross back to the mainland via Blaine, stopping for dinner somewhere along the way. From Blaine, if time and traffic permit, we might as well hit Chuckanut Drive on the way back home.

310 miles
Route: https://goo.gl/maps/UrrHR37oTJE2

Meet up at the Northgate Mall, outside of the RAM restaurant. KSU 8:30 am.

Important: To cross the border, you’ll need a U. S. passport, U.S. passport card, NEXUS card, or an Enhanced Driver’s License.

Admission to the Deeley museum is C$10 (about $7.60 US).

You do like donuts, don’t you?

* Awesome donuts, NOT Timmy’s!

I'd also suggest wearing a full face helmet. While 3/4 helmets are still legal in B.C., some of the border people will turn you away unless you have full face on.

Gas in Pt Roberts is 60 cents a gallon more than Bellingham.
Also, each border crossing may take 30 min or more. Plan accordingly.

I'd be interested in doing this one. Any chance you could pick me up on the 164th street exit off the I-5 so I don't have to double back? lol

Never been into Canada. Suppose I should leave the pocket knife at home for this one?

And will they provide the hockey jersey and maple syrup at the border or must I bring my own?

How about that! Looks like it's cheap Canadian gasoline for us. I wonder, do they do ethanol?

Let's see who all is in, then we can plan pickup spots accordingly.

No big knives, guns, radar detectors, or homegrown tree fruit!

Everyone's health is just fine, thank you very much.

As it's nearly midnight, here's the Reader's Digest condensed version:
The trip to Point Bob went well; the weather up in the frozen north was much nicer than the Seattle gloom I left in the morning. We had donuts and sandwiches shortly after crossing the border, then went to the Deeley museum where they were putting on an event in the parking lot. After watching the stunterz do wheelies, stoppies, and leak coolant, we hit the museum and saw gobs of old Harley's and Indians.

Next up was Point Bob, where we visited the border marker, did the loop, spent some time on the beach, then had dinner before heading back. Point Bob is a beautiful area, laid back, and a nice break from Vancouver traffic.

You missed this too:

The stunterz finale at the Deeley motorcycle museum in Vancouver, BC.

The dude who dropped the green bike at the end left a little bit of coolant behind too.
