Thumbs up CALL TO ACTION! Motorcycle Rider Protest at the Capitol - Friday 3/17 11am

From Brian Lange (Abate of WA - Legislative Affairs Officer)
CALL TO ACTION!! DEMONSTRATION PROTEST AT THE CAPITOL

With House Transportation Committee Chair, Rep. Judy Clibborn refusing to hold a hearing on SSB5378 (the Lane Sharing Bill), and with ABATE leadership approval, I am calling for a peaceful protest demonstration at the sundial between the John A Cherberg and John L O'Brien buildings behind the Capitol on Friday, March 17th at 11:00 AM.. This will put us directly below Rep. Clibborn's office. Feel free to bring hand held signs that read something to the effect of; "GIVE 5378 A HEARING", "FREE 5378", "LANE SHARING RELIEVES CONGESTION", "WSP SHOULDN'T CONTROL LEGISLATION", etc. Be creative, but not rude if you make a protest sign. you get the idea...whether they are just paper and felt pen signs, that is fine.

The goal is to fill that area with bikers below her office, make a few speeches, and get our message across that we are simply asking for 5378 to be heard in a public hearing. With only a quarter of the bills dropped in the Senate making it to the House, and no real opposition appearing among the committee members, we are stating our desire that the Chair hold a public hearing on SSB5378 asap.

Weekends and Friday afternoons don't work.
Most of the Legislators go home for the weekend.

Protest?
Isn't it "Support"?
And as far as weekends - they will hear about it and see it on the surveillance camera footage on Monday.

Heck, I'm only 115 miles south in Clackamas, weather looks good. Might try to take the mid-day off. I'll park with my plate facing away

So you can't go?

All it will take is one sentence.
Call (360) 786-7926 and leave this message on their voicemail right now: "I request a hearing on 5378."

How'd it go?

What a stupid twat. The senate passes it, it's a great idea for both safety and traffic congestion.

15-20 people showed up to do their protest, the news people covered it, and it had no positive effect what so ever. Embarrassing a committee chair and trying to force their hand on an issue that they do not support is totally counter productive.

On the plus side, I do know of one person who made their very first trip to Olympia, and he wants to go again to learn more of the system.

(Yes, I was in Olympia, but I was having face to face meetings with people who are instrumental in actually moving legislation, but no where near the protest.)

Your persistent work on this issue is creating incremental progress, Larry. Each year the legislation goes a little further down the path. It'll get there eventually, thanks to folks like you who work within the established process. Thank you.

There are a lot of people who are helping make those incremental changes. One of the key pieces of the puzzle is the concerned riders making positive connections with their legislators to educate them on the issue. We're effectively dead in the water this year, but the bill is not completely dead until the final adjournment (Sine Die) next year. During the interim this summer is the time for riders to catch up to their reps in district, establish a good relationship, and make the case in a less hurried atmosphere.

Yep, I went to the protest, saw Larry (away from the protest )

I've been thinking about this whole thing for a bit since being there. I see Larry's point of it being counter productive, but I also see it as a way of getting it out to the public. The coverage was on multiple networks, on multiple days.

There's a number of non motorcyclists, in my circle of friends, that never heard of lane splitting/sharing. IMO, this is the kind of stuff that can at least get the public aware of what motorcyclists are trying to change in our state.

You might get the right person (that is a motorcyclist) with the right connections that saw this on one of the networks, and say, "Huh, I never new this was in the works. I think I'm going to call so an so, and see if I can help get this bill moving along."

OR, "Huh, why is this Judy Clibborn still chair of the transportation committee. I'm going to have to call so and so to start taking steps in getting her removed."

I just think making it more public, makes more people aware, and maybe someone that didn't know about the bill can now make a positive difference.
