Best route through Washington?

I rode up Hood Canal to Port Townsend yesterday and got to thinking about the best roads/routes through Washington for a week long trip.

What I came up with was: start in Seattle, then down to Highway 12 across to Yakima, then Walla Walla. Stay overnight in Walla Walla with some wine tasting, then head down the Columbia River Gorge, through Vancouver, out to Long Beach or Ocean Shores for night 2. Up to Neah Bay, then over to Port Townsend/Fort Worden for night 3. Have a short day 4 just consisting of a ferry to Whidbey, hit Mt. Erie in Anacortes, then up to Bellingham (with a possible Baker run) for night 4. Day 5 would obviously have to be a trip down Highway 9 to the North Cascades Highway, ending in Winthrop. Day 6 would be riding out to Grand Coulee Dam, then to Leavenworth for a night of good beer and sausage. A gentle ride back home across Highway 2 on day 7, assuming you're not too hung over.

Does anyone else have a better one? I've been thinking about it all day and can't think of anything else that wouldn't wind up being monotonous. Admittedly I don't know the northeastern section of the state at all, so I'm sure those folks will have input.

there's no such thing as a full ride through washington without hitting spiral highway (clarkston wa) and the rattlesnake(WA Route 129 and OR 3 south of Boggan's Oasis) south of that

While not a route, per se, you could make this a 5 corners ride. Blaine, Neah Bay, Ilwaco, Boggan's Oasis, and (Northport/Usk/Metaline Falls (whichever you can fit into your plans)).

To get to Boggan's Oasis, you can either dip into Oregon and take the Tollgate highway, or you can stay in WA by going north on 395 at the junction with 14, then hit 12 going east. That will cause you to backtrack.. but you'll be backtracking on Rattlesnake Grade. It such a great motorcycling road.. you might end up wanting to run it another two times.

Grab 410 through Chinook Pass in lieu of 12 and stop at the Woodshed Restaurant and Lounge for a cinnamon roll and coffee.

Good call. I always loved Chinook Pass, too. 410's a great riding road.
