1st Gen/ 2005 Fz1 help

I'm wanting to do a sprocket change to give me better bottom end acceleration but the amount of information online is over whelming, but also tends to be directed more towards the newer not as cool second generation fz1. Been looking at the vortex v3. Which is a 15th up front. But I read somewhere that the 1st Gen is already a 15th and the second generation is a 16t. See what I'm saying. To order much info?
Anybody know about this?

The Gen I has a 16 tooth front sprocket. For information on the FZ1 check out YamahaFZ1OA.com. There is a TON of information on that site, especially Pat's FZ1 Page:

This is also a pretty good site to check stock setup for most bikes.

You could always count the teeth (or there's a mark on the sprocket if it's not caked in grime).

If you're not the original owner I'd make sure to check the sprockets you have on

Stock gearing is 16/44. I've run 15/44, but the 15T sprocket wore out prematurely, I thought. I now have 16/48 set-up, that works well. The 15T is a much easier change, and to see how you like it.

Aint no one hatin' your first gen, why you gotta be hatin' second gens?

Stock first gen should be 16t. Second gen was 17. I recently swapped mine out, pretty easy. My understanding is under 16 wears faster.

Aftermarket ones don't have a rubber siding piece on them, so you get a little more noise. I have to look for it though, it's not annyoing enough to me to swap it out with a factory 16t. (don't think you can get a 15t that way). I'll probably do a 46/47 in the rear as well.

Couple things to keep in mind: Your tire size effects it. I have a 55 on my rear, it was like dropping 2 teeth in the back, but put the speedometer dead on (they're off from the factory). Putting a 16t up front with the 55 makes my speedometer read 10% over. 66mph is actually 60mph. Changing out the rear sprocket will make this worse. There are things you can install to make it right, but my understanding is they mess with the odometer.

A GPS speedometer for your phone is a free app. If you have a holder for your phone on your bike it's easy to see how much your speedo is off. Unsure of how first gen differs in these problems.

I use a speedohealer to get the speedometer dialed in, but you are right about the odometer being off. Probably runs about 6% lower than real miles.

Maybe let the speedometer read 4-5% fast, as it might keep you from getting a ticket, and the odometer will be closer. Just a thought.

I have a 2002 FZ1 geared 15-47 and love it. I have tried 16-47, 16-45, 15-45, 15-44 and stock gearing 16-44.
You can run the stock chain length with each combo but I did buy a new chain for the 15-47 combo just so I had a bit more wheel base to help keeping the front tire on the ground. I also have the speedo healer which corrects the speedo and a gear indicator just so I don't keep looking for 6th gear. For me its a great combo and I pretty much have run this 1 down 3 up on every bike I have had.

I need tips on suspension. Mines way too soft it's scary some times. This afternoo I turned everything in full then out two. Except preload on the rear. Haven't touched that. But ya Im going to start there. And softer or stiffen as needed.

I have the Penske 8983 rear shock and Traxxon Dynamics AK20 kit for the front. Way better than stock.
