KTM RC390 Forum

Do a Power Commander from Chad Wells at Commonwealth Motorcycles, he has all kinds of maps that are spot on. Night and day in ride-ability.

Also stock brake pads are complete garbage. Change them if they have not already been done.

right now funds be pretty tight...but first big $ I want to get is a rear shock!...the stocker is pretty soft for a 215lb guy like me!...lol....mapping will be on my list as well once funds free up.

I totally "get" the idea of switching to a much smaller, lighter bike. I have a lot of current orthopedic issues in addition to osteoarthritis. I've found in recent years I'd MUCH rather ride my smaller, lighter bikes than the Z1000. If it wasn't for Kevin liking it, and it's high mileage (> 105K but still runs great), I'd try trading it for a 2nd generation Ninja 250. When I bought one for my Nephew a dozen years ago I found it to be one of the most fun bikes I've ever ridden.

I'm very glad to hear the little KTM is making your riding more enjoyable. I hope to get back to daylong riding this summer after nearly two years off the bikes.

I have a friend who has a 1000RR Beemer he tracks and commutes with that I sold a low mile 2007 Ninja 250 to for his 'kids' to ride. He rode it and said "I get it now" and I am pretty sure he has more miles on it than his kids... They are great fun. And the clutch pull is minimal as well.
As I have aged clutch pull, seat height and bike weight have become something I am 'aware' of. There are times in traffic I have started thinking, "An automatic transmission would be nice".
I sold off my wicked fast (KX500) dirt bike and have two little 'slow' ones now, sold most of my track stuff and have slowed down on the street. Things change...

FYI, if you're needing to upgrade the stock suspension, talk to Optimum Performance Motorsports, they have the Andreani Cartridge Kits available for $599 for the 390.

we have a lot of people who have a blast on those at the OPRT track days as well.

Agreed, stock rear shock is a pogo stick.

There was a market for used 2000ish R6 shocks that are a bolt on upgrade. They were about $20 shipped on ebay until all the RC390 owners figured this out and snapped them all up. Great upgrade for almost no money.

Formula390 over on the RC390 Forum still has a collection of the R6 shocks for sale with Racetech springs to match your weight.

How's the maintenance been? Also tinkering with the thought of a 390 or Ninja 300.

maintenance is easy to do in my opinion....the bike is not without a few issues that I have heard have been delt with on the 2017 models..this being idle issues as well as head gaskets being blown due to over heating and poor mating....mine to date has only had the idle issues, hence the Bazzaz unit.....and the over heat issues I believe is due to fueling being to lean...

as for getting the ninja 300, my other half has a 2010 250 ninja, that compaired to my rc390, feels like a tank....have also sat on the ninja 300 and feels just about the same...the one thing the ninja has is dependability and lots of spare parts for them!..I'm not sure if I was looking at another small cc bike that it would be the ninja....the Yamaha R3 is quite a bit the same as the ninja in size and feel, but have heard a few stories of oil pumps failing!....so not sure where you would go with the opinions I have......and these are just my opinions and observations.

I do enjoy my RC 390 though so far....and its a blast in cornering, the new rear shock should help a lot, but I am sure will highlight the poor front fork set up....but that is fixable.

Mine was recalled for the oil pump thing. They did it in a day. I have not personally heard of anyone having the actual issue...
Not sure about the 300 Ninja but the R3 is quite a bit faster than either of my modified 250 Ninja's. WAY more refined as well as more comfortable.

We traded in the wife's 2012 ZX14R on a side by side UTV a few months ago...

Hey COOL on the move, I had same issues on FZ1 so when I found the Super Tenere YA WHOOO. You need some Nell's love on it now. I drifted away from here last summer so I missed this thread. Glad your still twisting Grip West.
