Wallowa Mountain Loop (FS 39) -- when is it likely to open?

Howdy,

So my son who lives near Denver is buying one of my bikes from me, and I'm planning a meandering route to deliver it. I'm thinking of heading east, then taking the Rattlesnake Grade south to Joseph. I've never ridden FS 39 (Wallowa Mountain Loop) south from there to Copperfield. Can anyone on the forum opine on when FS 39 is likely to be open (typical springtime opening date)? That looks like a nice way to head south and east toward Boise and points eastward.

He's eager to get the bike and I have some time available in mid-May. Just wondering if that's too optimistic for FS 39.

Thanks,

Rob

Sounds as if mid-May could be pushing things a bit. From the web "The Hells Canyon Scenic Byway is usually closed by snow from late October through late May or early June and is not passable with motor vehicles."

When it is close to time of departure call a ranger station and see if open yet.

I've seen it closed into late June in the past, and there was a lot of snow this season. Best route something with less elevation.

Thanks for the information. Itís starting to look like this trip may be bumped back to mid-June, so perhaps thereís hope for taking the FS-39 route.

if it aint open try anthony lakes ski area just south of there, quite fun in that entire area, can't really go wrong with any road. and you know what happens if you hit snow? just turn around and try something else. that's how riding goes.
