Too early for Mary's Peak?

Hi Everyone,
I'm here my bike is here: heading out to the south later today and highway 34 hoping to go up to Mary's Peak. Is it too early? What do you all think? Sure like to run it up there today if possible. Have a great day and thanks for all responses...

I've been thinking about doing that lately also and curious about the answer. Never been there.

Report Mary's Peak 2/22/20

It was 2:40 when I headed out.
Destination King's Highway 223 to Philomath and the mysterious Mary's Peak of which I have seen many a motorcycle video running up there. But probably NONE in February! Oh but I wasn't the ONLY ONE.
So gas stop near my soon to be new house, quick U-turn, pass my street to the house and kept on going down to Viewcrest and switchbacks down to the River Rd. which meanders along the Willamette River.
This time I had River Rd. to MYSELF and I RIPPED through it and enjoyed every corner. FUN! Wasn't the last cornering fun I would have today. Cross the river and I'm in Independence, OR left turn on Monmouth Rd takes me to the town of the same name. Crossing 99W and now I'm looking for Hwy. 223 where is it? No clue
But then I see a sign "King's Valley" is all it says. Nothing about a Highway by the same name. I take it, flying on instincts only. Holy Cow I was right. Finally a stop sign and the famed Highway and I was truly now in the Valley of the Kings.
OK so now Valley of the Kings: I'm looking for pyramids, and camels and a large river called the Nile. Well I had the river anyway. LOL
NO ONE on this road I see a BEAUTIFUL white covered bridge. Will get a pic some day. I go through a town called Pedee and another named Wren, and a river called Luckiamute and like what? HAHA
This valley was beautiful today: the green trees and fields were just gorgeous. Sigh.
Finally a left turn on Highway 20 to Philomath and then a right on Hwy. 34.
OH HWY 34!
How I love you already and we have only just met today for the first time! The corners were second gear gems, linked forever and ever, never stopping....NO REST FOR THE WICKED. HAHAHA!
RIPPED THIS TECHNICAL GEM. It continues like this ALL THE WAY TO THE COAST and a town called Waldport. OH we will be BACK!
But today we took the fateful right turn to Mary's Peak. Mary's Peak the highest mountain in the Oregon Coast Range at 4000 ft. And it's February. What's wrong with this picture. I'll tell you what. LOL
So up we go ripping through some very tight stuff: pavement is not perfect but hey it's doable and the gravel index is low so we keep going up, being wisely cautious because SERIOUSLY I know nothing about this road and it's condition in what is still a winter month.
Ten miles of switchbacks up and up and up. No water, pavement dry but as we got higher there were some areas in the shady zones that had water....hmmm wait a minute: no way it rained up here today. Ruh Roh.
Higher pass a trailhead, pass the waterfall, last chance to be wise and a sign that says FOUR MILES to the VIEWPOINT, which was my goal. We never made it. After the waterfall there was NO WAY to turn around....Ruh Roh.
Now it's dark in spots and snow is accumulating on the side of the road: I hear "Deliverance" music in my head" Oh Adele what have you done now. You are on a very powerful German made machine with tons of torques HEADING UP INTO THE SNOW ZONE, on a bike that likely won't hold traction with it's big fat sport bike rear tire.
Now there's SNOW IN THE ROAD, and what's worse ICE. And lots of it, and now it comes down to dodging the ice and finding strips of road not covered with it, sometimes on the opposite side of the road hoping traffic will not show up at the wrong time. Still traveling steep uphill wondering how in the hell am I going to get down.
FINALLY a sunny stretch and A MIRACLE THE ROAD IS DRY and there's a SECOND MIRACLE pull out which I immediately take advantage of! WHEW we can turn around here and there's nothing but SNOW up ahead. This will have to do. Take my pics and with MUCH TREPIDATION turn around and headed back to the icy segment this time DOWNHILL.
I am practically WALKING MY BIKE DOWNHILL. Yes I am probably moving at 10mph but I do not want to accelerate faster than that. All of a sudden here comes another bike a Honda CBR600! Stop and tell him he can turn around just a bit uphill. He looks relieved. LOL I can imagine. And down I go. Finally back to dry pavement.
STOP to take my waterfall pics and the Honda and two cars pass me here.
Now I gleefully get back on the bike, to tear it up down this hill, only to quickly meet up with the much slower Honda leading the way for the two cars. UGH
Follow this parade for as long as I can stand it: pass one car, now back on Hwy 34, pass another and now I'm behind the Honda. We are in the sweet section of corners on 34 I referred to earlier. I'm dying because I love these corners and YES I see an opportunity, stomp past the Honda and rip the rest of it and love every minute of it.
Arriving in Philomath stopped to get gas.
Decided to go the unexciting way back to Salem, by Hwy. 34 to Corvallis then freeway then to Salem exit, make it back to my sister's at 6PM sharp.
Roll it into the backyard to my bro-in-law's shop and WHEW I made it.
What a day!
If today is any indication riding up here in this section of Oregon should be a blast. And I haven't even made it to the Coast yet.
Oh I will soon enough! Yes I will.

Pics from Mary's Peak Road

Pics from yesterday's ride.
Note the snow in second pic on the hill: I was about a mile, maybe two from the top. Turned around here.

If you haven't been to Mary's Peak before, I went for the first time last year.

Sooo...apparently everyone goes from the hwy 34 side? We came through from hwy20 by Burnt Woods, OR. Fun little rip until you hit Mary's Peak Road: 10-12 miles of gravel! That's what happens when you let me plan things

If you think Hwy 34 east of Mary's Peak is good wait till you ride the rest of the road to Waldport! When you hit Hwy 101 at the coast shoot straight across it to the wall at the bay for a quick snack at Subway then turn right around and head back.

I went to Waldport on Tuesday and took a jaunt down Bayview Drive, missing the left turn at Beaver Creek and ended up doing some off road gravel and mud riding on the S1000R, before turning around. Ugh NOT the best use of the bike to say the least but we did it! Took pics at Seal Rock and ran it up to Lincoln City and back by 6:15 in Salem. Good to know about the Subway. I will take advantage as I am the type to run a road back and forth like that.
