Ride report: Astoria 5/20-21

Hi all!
Its been a while since I was here last. Life got crazy, but TheI'm finding that I need more moto in my life, so here I am! I'm baaaack!

Anyhoooo....

The BF and I took off to Astoria from PDX Saturday morning. Warmed ourselves up with a jaunt down Skyline from Germantown all the way to Rocky Point Road, then headed over to the Vernonia Hwy to Mist and out 202. Nice day, good twisties, the roads seemed in decent shape for the most part...

We were going through a nice set of twisties - a tight right directly into a tight left, when I saw a County Sheriff parked on the side of the road. The sheriff was walking toward another man standing on the shoulder who was shrugging his shoulders. Then I noticed the helmet on the ground next to him. I never did see the bike. I assume it went off the road in that turn and into the bushes behind the rider. He was ok - gave the thumbs up - so we went on our way.

My BF is a new rider, so we weren't much over the speed limit when two other sportbikes - an Aprilia and another 600ish bike came up behind us. They passed the BF and were coming up on me as I was cresting a hill. I was over to the right, ready for them to pass, but I saw that a car was coming the other way over the hill, and I wasn't sure the 600ish bike saw it. I signaled to him to wait, but he took it any way, and threaded the needle between me and the car as we all crested the hill at once. The Aprilia held back and waited till I had a clear view and signaled him to party on by.

Later we saw these two at the Elk viewing turnout talking to somebody in a Spider. We pulled over not too much later to take a breather. While doing that, a rider on an S1000 RR and another on a VRod rode past. We decided it was time to continue on, so we got our stuff together and did so. Once again, going through the twisties - this time a downhill right hander - maybe a little decreasing radius, I see the S1000 rider pushing their bike out of the ditch while the VRod rider pulled up near them.

I continue through the twisties, enjoying the ride, finding my rhythm, and realizing that I hadn't seen the BF in my mirrors for a while, pull over to wait...and wait...and....wait. I just about turned around to go find him, when he appears and pulls up next to me. He says he had to stop because the Aprilia from earlier passed him on the inside of a turn, where the pavement had ripped from frost heaves and pogo'd the bike into the guardrail. It happened right infront of him. The rider got up and immediately checked his bike. The other riders arrived at the scene. After hearing that the crashed rider was ok, my BF took off to find me.

So 3 crashes in one afternoon that day. Everyone was ok, but I'm hoping they all took it a bit easy on the way home.

Our ride was great btw.

More soon. BBQ is ready.

Cheers!

I did that same trip solo the the day before you guys on Friday. I was the only bike on the road all the way to Astoria. I decided to come all the way back on Hwy 30 though to try and get home before the Memorial day traffic exodus . I did come across some gravel in a few turns on 202 that made me close throttle.

That's a lot for one ride! Too much! It might be the result of first super nice weekend and riders who didn't ride all winter getting too excited. It's a good reminder to those of us who don't ride all year long to start slow.

I am glad you were able to enjoy your ride and no one got hurt after all. And the BBQ was later

I found some freshly paved twisties today in the opposite direction

Just a bunch of weekend warriors out showin off hittin the pavement. Darwinism at work, at least none of em got themselves kilt. I have a feeling we're gonna be reading about a lot of riders killin themselves this summer. Chill out out there people, ride to arrive alive. Y'all have families to think about. I'll step off my pedestal now. Thank you for reading. Have a nice day and rubber side down.

Every. Damn. Time.

I know that plenty of small / old / cheap bikes end up in the ditch, but the only ones I ever see are the large / expensive bikes. Back East it was expensive Harleys. Out here it's Aprilias and Ducatis. As if somehow a huge dollar sign on the loan somehow makes the owner (of the now bikeless debt) a better rider.

We were out this way sunday and had a rider on an R1 in the group ahead of ours go down. He said there was gravel in the road and he "had to lay it down", but it looked more like he target fixated and rode into the gravel because the road was otherwise clean. Luckily he was alright and the bike looked ride able, but it could have been worse as he narrowly missed the guardrail. On a side note; he was wearing jeans, canvas shoes, an icon stryker vest and a helmet with a Mohawk.
