A Ride in the Mountains

Went for a little ride over the weekend. Renton to Iron Creek on Friday, by way of Chinook / Cayuse Pass. Iron Creek to Bear Meadow to Cougar to Voodoo Too and SeeSee in Portland to Backwoods Brewing in Carson and back to Iron Creek on Saturday. Iron Creek to Stonehenge in Goldendale to Hop Nation in Yakima and back to Renton on Sunday. 819 miles per Google.

Yanked a worn out Pirelli Angel before the trip and threw on a new Pirelli Diablo. Wish I knew how many miles were on this front Pirelli Angel. Oddly, the rear outlasted the front. While I was working on the bike, I threw some new Galfer HH pads in the front, and an Ohlins shock on the rear. Also added a hugger to try to cut down on the amount of pine needles and other crud under the tail. The Ohlins was notably worse than the stock shock at first. It really felt godawful until I stopped and added three clicks of both rebound and suspension. That made a big difference, but it still needs a bit of fine tuning.

Rushed down to Iron Creek Campground after ditching work early Friday. Didn't even stop for pictures as I went through Chinook / Cayuse Pass. Mt. Rainier was clouded in anyway. Got to camp and set up not much before dark and had some horribly green firewood. Thank goodness for a cheap backpacking stove, because I still got a hot dinner.

Saturday Morning was my second attempt to hit Windy Ridge this year. First was back in May/June, and you could only get to the snow park on FS99. Nope, ranger truck and too much traffic to sneak around the barricades at Bear Meadow. Bear Meadow view was good, but cloudy. An unnamed viewpoint provided some nice pictures though.

Rode out through Cougar, WA to Portland for some Voodoo Doughnuts. Saw the line and decided to hit Voodoo Too accross the river. Same damn doughnuts, with zero wait. And what's a visit to Portland without hitting SeeSee?

After fueling myself and the bike, it was time for the long way round to get a beer and back to camp. Rode around Mt. Hood through Government Camp and The Dalles. With doughnuts and an empty growler in the tailbag! Great beer and pizza at Backwoods Brewing.

Got caught out on FS25 after dark. Holy shit that's awful! Made it back to camp and got the fire going, then had a few glasses of Backwood's Pecan Pie Porter and another doughnut or two after dinner.

Sunday morning was a late start. Burned up the last of the firewood over a lazy coffee and doughnut in while cooking breakfast. Thought about watching some flat track racing at Goldendale / Eddieville, but took my sweet time packing up. Another quick run down to the Columbia brought me to Stonehenge. Very impressive memorial.

After Stonehenge, I flew up to Yakima for food and fuel. Man was it hot down there. Hop Nation had some good stuff, including a Candied Bacon BLT. Hit the Yakima Canyon Road and then was forced to cross over on I-90 because Cayuse / Chinook was closed. What a fucking nightmare... What should have taken 15 minutes at 80 mph took 80 minutes at 15 mph. In addition to eclipse traffic, and the usual bullshit returning to the city, there's construction all the way over.

Couple of my favorite pictures:

PeteN95, Willow, bcj and 2 others like this.

I really like Backwoods Amber Ale, have it often enough at pubs and in cans, but I've never stopped at the brewery. If anyone's up for a meetup there I'm in. But if you're just passing through Carson and want a quick sandwich, there's a deli next door called The Grind that does a very decent smoked brisket.

See See's is great. I'm in there once or twice a week but it could use a few minor layout changes to be more hangoutable: if they could get a couple of larger tables in, and at least an awning for shade and rain out on the side where the picnic tables (and free compressed air) are, they'd probably double their business.

Awesome post with great pictures.

I need to get down there again to actually hit Windy Ridge. Third time is the charm, right?

Brisket is always welcome!

I'm leaving town Thursday alright, even heading south again. Much farther south though. Spending a couple days in Vegas.
