Portland to Detroit

Rode with my friends down to Detroit Lake this last Sunday 7/14 and had a blast! We went through Estacada to Ripple Brook and on to Detroit. This was my first time doing this ride and won't be the last. I've rode to Ripple Brook several times, but had never gone past the turn off for Timothy Lake. The road after the turn off does get a bit bumpy to say the least. Theres a few bumps hiding out in the turns so be careful. About 1/2 way or so (middle of nowhere) we hit a huge swarm of butterflies. Its was pretty crazy as we all got plastered by these lil guys. Once we got into Detroit it was a bit crowded and I had a car pull out in front of me... All is well, I just beeped my horn and he seen me. We filled up and had lunch at the Cedars Restaurant. Traffic wasn't bad at all on this trip until we got back close to Estacada. Was a good time

Yeah yeah.. I was out there last year right around the 4th and got caught in a swarm too.. I have the pics to prove it, just don't know how to upload em here.. twas nasteeee. Any speed above 50 and it didn't give the critters time to get out of the way so we got absolutely plastered. So 50 it was.. and that was bad enuf. Good thing the little gas station in Detroit has a water hose, those dam things were in every crack and crevice you can imagine. Must be that time of year. What the hell, maybe it's the dreaded "butterfly effect", all that fluttering is causing global warming.. whatever the case, watch out, they can catch you out and be dangerous. Not to mention a bitch to clean bike, lids, self, air box, radiator, etc etc.. maybe some tear-offs next time out there...?

I've "run into" the butterfly swarms on trips to Detroit...adds a bit of drama to a great ride...
