Once around the Mountain

Had to get out of the house for a while yesterday, so went for a ride. A ride around Mount Rainier.

Threw on my Blue Ranger outfit and realized I haven't worn it since before I got married... My track pants are meant to fit snug, and the snap has always been difficult, but now it won't stay closed for anything. Whatever, they're zipped to my jacket.

Took off from Renton to Maple Valley and Greenwater, down WA 410 to Chinook Pass and the Overlook on the far side. The massive snow bank from earlier in the season is mostly melted, but is still four feet tall in places. Hiking paths look clear all around, and one muddy little lake is just swarming with bugs and tourists.

Doubled back to hit WA 123 through Cayuse Pass and down through the tunnel. Came across a fresh wreck just after my tunnel photo op. A small group was directing traffic and trying to drag bikes out of the ditch. I stopped to lend a hand. At least two bikes weren't going anywhere on their own. Going to be some expensive repairs too: an 1199 with mirrors ripped off and shift rod bent into an "L" and lots of rash, and a Multi with a flat and maybe a bent rim from possibly running over the 1199. Someone mentioned a third bike needing a tow; I think that was a busted shifter pedal and no clutch. Nobody was bleeding (full Ducati textile gear), but there were several injuries: maybe a broken wrist from the 1199 and a bad limp from the Multi pillion, and possibly a concussion for the Multi rider. Another member of their group set off in search of cell service after we moved the mess to a pull-off.

After that, I rode through Morton and Elbe, past Northwest Trek, and back to Renton. Picked up the wife from work for a beer at Four Generals, still wearing my under armor. Some deliciously weird shit there like an Experimental Sour, English Bitters, Rhubarb cider, and a Grapefruit cider. Would have tried the Passionfruit cider too, but a screaming brat sent us home. My second trip there and will definitely be back.

Candiya, FeralRdr, skjeflo and 6 others like this.

Let's do that ride, or similar route in that area over chinook pass, around Rainier, this Saturday? If your not busy.

As a Ducati rider I can get away with this joke before others beat me to it:

Three Ducs down? What happened, the trailer hauling the bikes to Starbucks tip over?

Long way to the nearest Starbucks. Maybe the flatbed will stop by on the way to the shop and the hospital. On a serious note though I hope the next stop is a hospital, even if it's just for an X-Ray and A-Okay.

Sounds good. Saturday is supposed to be around 80 in Renton, but 66 up in Naches. A nice break from the heat. It would be fun to get a few more people involved too.

I almost stopped for lunch in Elbe yesterday, but didn't feel like waddling around sight-seeing in the Power Ranger gear. It seems very much a tourist trap, with lots of photo ops.

Pretty sure we saw as we were making our way back. Great day for a ride up there... well except for all the other cars.

About what time was the crash? I'm wondering if it was the group we saw at Whistling Jacks?

There was a small group headed from Tully's in Issaquah to Whistlin' Jack's yesterday. Might have been them. Been waiting to hear on TOS, but nothing yet

Those dang Italian literbikes, with no where to go.

Hope the folks will heal and be back on the road.

Now, not a fan of Mt. Rainer National Park, as I got 3 tickets in one instance,
when I thought I was just touring through. Still bitter about that.

Might be the same group. The cases on the Multi in the back look right, as does the black one by the truck. I think there was a Monster involved too. They were part of a larger group that was either farther ahead or farther back - things were really confused.

I bet that's quite the story.

It's not that exciting really. Had my fun at Mt. St. Helens and decided why not cruise through Mt. Rainier on the way home.

Headed out of Packwood on 12, left on 123 into the park, just touring, see a guy on a Ninja heading the other way twirling his hand above his helmet, cops ahead I thought, toned the speed down a bit for 3 miles, wasn't really going that fast, maybe 55mph, no visual, approach a white truck heading up hill, same way I'm going, the last big sweeping uphill left hander before the 410 junction.

Long uphill straight away before the big sweeper, double yellow, pass truck with plenty of straight away left, sweep into the left hander about 65mph, get to the junction of 410, a park ranger is waving me into the gravel turn out.

White truck I just past follows me in moments later, turns out to be the head honcho park ranger. He was not too pleased with what I thought was "touring." I noticed after I crossed the double yellow an emblem on the door panel of the truck, nothing else, hmm, is that what all the hand twirling was about? Wreckless driving, Passing on a double yellow, no insurance. I mention insurance not required in Washington, he says "that's news to me", continues to write three tickets with the carbon copy for each. Super lame way to end a great ride at Mt. St. Helens. Had a Subaru Justy pressuring me down 410 after the ticket, going the speed limit.
