North-Central WA peeps: A Question

A while back I posted a thread about an idea for a vacation ride/trip. If you missed it, you can find it here.

My wife and I are in the planning stages of making this happen in about a month, starting with Memorial Day weekend and ending the following weekend. My question is- what is in this area that should NOT be missed? There have to be a few locals with inside information, or a few of you who ride Hwy20 fairly regularly who have some ideas.

Given my wife's penchant for all things "U.S. expansionist period", A/K/A the "Go West, young man!" movement, I know that Winthrop is a definite stop and likely candidate for an overnight stay. The Seattle City Light dams will also be a stop, hopefully with a visit to the visitors center as well. What else?

We will also be returning via 410 and through the Yakima valley, so any insight there is welcome as well. We will be visiting former homesteads/orchards and the graves of my relatives for the most part, with a bent towards historical perspective. Any leads for museums related to the area, or history resources such as old libraries and the like are welcomed! And yes, we will be stopping for a Miner's burger...that's a given!

What else should we be doing on this trip?

Consider spending a night at the Coulee House Inn & Suites across from the Grand Coulee Dam. You can just walk across the street to watch the LASER show on the dam. It's worth the trip IMHO. The hotel is nothing special but the light show is very cool.

Stop for tamales in Union Gap for appetizers before burgers at Miners. They are located just down the road from Miners. If you are headed straight home from there you can even grab some of the frozen tamales, they travel great.

loshernandeztamales ? Union Gap Washington

The Stop and Go at 2820 Fruitvale Blvd in Yakima between 16th Ave & 40th Ave has better food and is way less expensive than Miners and it has a nice yard with picnic tables under the trees. I used to eat at Miners a lot when I lived in Yakima but the S & G is now my favorite place.

STATUS UPDATE -
May 5, 2017

SR 20 remains closed between mileposts 134 and 171 but the spring reopening work is now entering week 5.

The crews are pushing to to reopen a week earlier than estimated - by Memorial Day - which would still be the latest since 1974's June 14 reopening.

During the clearing, pedestrians (skiers) & bicyclists are prohibited Monday through Thursday, but allowed past the gates Friday through Sunday

Hopefully it will be open for you.

Laconner Wa is a bit like Winthrope but nautical in theme with good food , and a big antique store with lots of other shops.
