Made a Run up to Wynoochee Lake

So this past weekend I went up to Shelton to visit family, and help my brother out with some yard chores. For the trip home, I decided to take the scenic route via Lake Wynoochee.

This was my first time riding these roads, and was overall impressed with the road conditions. Though I did encounter 2 1/2 miles of gravel on Cougar Smith Rd, it wasn't unexpected, and it wasn't worse than anything that I've encountered before. Satsop Cloguallum Rd was a little bumpy, but nothing horrible, and it certainly isn't worse than FS-25 or Skate Creek Rd.

Wynoochee Valley Road was in great shape. Though I prefer tighter more technical roads, I also appreciate nice smooth pavement with pleasant scenery. The picture below was taken in one of the straighter sections. For those who have never made this ride, this is not to imply that the road is a boring space shuttle landing strip, far from it to be sure. There are plenty of smooth sweepers to keep the ride interesting, even at a moderate pace.

The weather was beautiful on the trip out and up to the lake.

However, as I headed back down to Montesano heavy clouds rolled in and the temps dropped from the high 60's/low 70's, down into the mid 50's. I did pick up the pace a little to beat any rain; but fortunately it stayed dry, and by the time I reached HWY 12, the sun was back out with the temps rising back into a comfortable zone.

After a stop for Lunch at the Rain Country in McCleary, I headed back to Portland via the side roads through Rochester, Adna, and Boisfort. I was able to stay off the freeway until Longview, and though I considered jumping the river there, I decided to just slab I5 to get back into town before dark.

Great day for a ride, and it left me with the desire to get more exploring in on my next visit up that way.

Have you been able to get to Detroit from Estacada yet?

I've been mostly hitting Klickitat so far this year.

I grew up out in this area. I remember when the Wynoochee Rd was gravel all the way to dam bombing down the road at 60+ MPH in my first car just to smooth out the washboard and bumps through Grisdale. Good times.

Lot's of places to go out there on a DS or ADV bike.

I hear a rider has made it to Detroit that way this year. He is not afraid of.a little snow though. So be prepared to turn back if it's not your cup of tea up there.

Well then tell that Angelic Spyder rider to take one for the team and hit up FS-48/Wamic Rd too. It's suppose to have one lane open between HWY 35 and Cedar Burn Rd, but the Forestry Service recommends Trucks or SUV's only (probably still has snow as well).
