Went with some friends back in 2010 I believe and it was a great time. Camped in the high school field and rode all over the place while there.

rally

I was in Baker City last summer on my SV and it was excellent riding! The little "tail of the Dragon" was freshly paved and somehow there were little rocks EVERYWHERE on the corners like a gravel truck had driven the road with the rear gate ajar. (Read: we dropped to 25mph and road it like we were in a parade riding past a police station). It sucked after having ridden across the state on sport bikes, but I didn't have a street sweeper for a chase vehicle so we could run it again.

This rally looks fun; the roads are truly epic.

This is pretty much a local ride for me. But for sure one that I enjoy. The canyon is in itself breathtaking (an overused word but fitting here) and the roads getting there and around there are wonderful too. Summertimes you have to keep an eye out for RV's and the like but most of the time it is clear sailing.

I doubt that anyone has ever visited Hell's Canyon and wished that they had stayed home and watched a basketball game on TV.

I certainly wouldn't have wanted to stay home but with the illegal gravel it really was disappointing for our group and ranked on the bottom for the roads we carved the rest of the trip. I'll have to go back another year.

Besides RV's, it should be noted that HWY 245 is the most direct route between Baker and many of the ranches out in the Unity area.

When we did the Rally in 2010, we were on our way back north when we came around a tight blind corner, and there was a big 18 wheeler with a flat bed full of hay coming head on, halfway over into our lane. With big rigs like that using the road, it's no wonder a lot of gravel gets pulled off the sides in the corners.

I hate to sound dumb (it comes naturally for me ) but I am not sure what you are referring to with "illegal gravel". I must confess that I have never heard of it. I have ridden the roads around there a couple hundred times in the last 17 years and they have always been excellent in my opinion.

Gravel: old meme from the previous place.
someone complaining about neighbors putting gravel in the alley. much fun poked.

BBQ: rekt - must have been bbq sauce packet that caused it. more poking.

don't worry about it. if it doesn't make sense; it probably doesn't.

Just a heads up
Chances are if you haven't booked a room by now you're not going to find 1 closer then 75 mi from there. This event usually books up a year in advance.

The little Dragon they say it has 188 turns in 14 miles How is the overall road condition?
From the videos I have watched it looks pretty chunky in a few spots!

Lot's of turns on 1 of the dirtiest roads in Oregon. We were also told a few years back that NF52 was "the best" road in Oregon, NOT!

I had been to the Hells Canyon Rally.I told them No ,But we were going this year!
They told me that their local club goes down with about 30 to 50 riders.

I am looking forward to this event more and more.I have heard nothing but good
About the event But have heard that the roads were sketchy at best,.....?

This is what Dooley Mt. Rd looked like last September.

At the time, it was relatively cooler out, so the tar snakes were not an issue for us, and there was very little gravel to contend with.

Just so you know, if your someone who likes to ride in, shall we say an "alacritous manner", bear in mind that the group of 30-50 Canadians may not be the only large group of riders out on the road. This may or not be an issue for you, but if your plans are to go out and hit up some of the funner roads at a moderately spirited pace, be prepared to run into a rolling road block. Especially in the tighter technical corners, where many bikes will be doing the recommended speed limit of the yellow signage. When I did the rally in 2010, we made the run out to the dam on Saturday, and we encountered several groups that were certainly in no hurry. Fortunately, HWY 86 does have many sections that you can pass safely, but even then some of the groups were so large that we were having to cut in and out of their formations as we passed. However, on Sunday we rode Dooley Mt Rd and didn't encounter any traffic whatsoever.

Not trying to encourage or discourage, just trying to provide a heads up since you've never been.
Arnbo likes this.

From the videos I have seen there are large groups of Harley's,Well cruiser bikes anyhow.
We are going more for the People watching and to take in the event. The riding will be just a added bonus.Mixed reviews on the road conditions But being it will all be new we will just be riding "The Pace". Thanks for your information.I just want to have a good ,Fun time without any headaches...........
