Carlton - Coast road closed as of 7/21

Went to ride out to the coast today out of Carlton on meadowlake road and found that the road is closed about 20 miles in. Looks like it may be closed for awhile. Maybe they are going to finish paving over that gravel section?

That dirt section along the river was one of the highlights of that route. If they're going to pave that over, it's a shame.

Yeah, there'll be a detour sign several miles before that, showing that you can go around via Bald Mountain and Bible Creek roads. It's only about 5 miles longer that way, though much slower because of the roads are narrow and -- when I rode it on Thursday -- a bit slick with muddy dirt in places. Still traces of moss but only down the center and it's probaby drying up now.

Still a great ride, no need to let a few slightly more technical miles in the middle stop you.

Took me by surprise too, and I checked the web before going. But I'm glad I went, it's the first time I've taken that side route and it's a hoot, totally worth doing for its own sake unless you're throttle mad. Nice place to stop in the middle at the Sheridan Peak overlook.

Also, I was pressed for time because I didn't want to be coming in on US26 west after 3:00pm -- this was a weekday and I hate having to put my boots down every few hundred yards on those last few parking-lot miles between Sylvan and the tunnel -- so after enjoying the hell out of that amazing road between Blaine and 101 I just wimped out and went up 101 to Tillamook, where I've yet to find anything interesting to do, and then back to Portland via OR6.

Much better if you have time to keep going to Cape Lookout and swing along the coast for a bit, because let's face it, 101 in the northern half of Oregon sucks hairy balls. Or if you're with friends, head down to Pacific City and hoist one at the Pelican brewery, right on the beach.

It's a continuation from last summer's construction project.

Update:

Quote:
Temporary Closures and Delays in Nestucca Area
Beginning in mid to late May 2019 the Nestucca Access Road will be temporarily closed for construction between Elk Creek and Davidson pit (gravel section), mile post 12.76 to 15.44. The road will remain closed until the end of October. Detours will use the Bald Mountain and Bible Creek Access Roads. No public access will be allowed during these time periods. Elk Bend campground will be temporarily closed. Alder Glen campground will remain open, accessed only from the west. Fan Creek and Dovre campgrounds will remain open, accessed only from the east. The Upper Nestucca OHV trail system will also remain open during all time periods.

I rode through via 130/22/Willamina/Bible Creek Rd/Nestucca from Pacific City to Carlton yesterday and it was open and clear. There were a couple of short gravel patches.

I saw that detour but didnt think it was paved. I ended up just doing some exploring around the construction area for a bit before going down and around to the coast
