Beaverton to So Cal route suggestions

Not much help from FB Riders. I'm hoping for some route/road suggestions. I plan on riding to Palm Springs in about 6 weeks. I plan on riding to Fossil, then south. Will probably stop to sleep twice. Too many roads to go blindly along via Google Maps w/o specific suggestions. Any help? I'll be on my VFR. Like twisties, just not 1200 miles worth!

Hey Matt. That is quite a long ride you have planned. I would drive instead but, if I were going to ride there are a couple of considerations I would take into account.

There are two huge traffic aneurysms that clog your route. The SF Bay area is one you can avoid. Los Angeles, not so much.

I would do the fun riding earliest. By the end of your journey (Two days? Three?) You might be ready to just plain get there.

Personally, I like to do the older highways and so I would head south out of McMinnville on Hwy 99. Take 126 west out of Eugene and then south on 101 at Florence.

Stay on 101 to Eureka and spend the night there. Two choices east. I don't know either road but I would go Hwy 36 to Red Bluff. You could also try 299 to Redding.

South on I-5 to (choose one) Sacramento, Lodi (my pick), or Stockton and then east a couple of miles to Hwy 99. South on 99 gives you more gas/food/rest room options than I-5 but also more traffic. Depending on how beat-to-shit you are at that point, you might spend the night in Bakersfield.

Then, over the mountain and into the LA sprawl. I've heard that you can do parts of the old Grapevine (and I am old enough to remember driving it before I-5 was built) but I don't know if it is true or how to access it even if it is.

Once over the hill, then the 210, and 10 and into Palm Springs.

Whatever roads you choose, be safe and enjoy the ride. Buena suerte amigo.

Stick on 19 south from Fossil.
395 south from John Day is an ok back way and somewhat scenic with desert and mountains all the way to Victorville.
Then 18, 247 down to Palm Springs.

Since you're there, take 74 up to the top of the pass from Palm Desert. It won't disappoint.

Hwy 2 across the top of the Angeles Nat. Forrest is another nice diversion if you have time.
Wasn't open yet in April when I was down there a few years ago, but May or June should work.

Me and the wife on our bikes went from Mineral CA to Maryhill State park in one day last summer on our bikes.

Your first day looks good.

If your just looking to get there I'd stay on 395 all the way to 58 then east to Barstow, then south on 247 to 62 then west to Palm Springs.

I don't know your riding abilities but that's along way in the heat for only two sleep periods.

Day 2

513 miles. Doable? Any suggestions or definite points of interest?
Looks like day three is just going to be a matter of taking 395 to Victorville, then 15 to 10 to Coachella, my destination for a day or two.

On the way back up

Any suggestions for roads on the way back up? I'll be riding up from San Diego and will probably ride hwy 5 up to/around Sacramento area, where I'll stop overnight. I want to break off at that point (or someplace close to it) and hit some nice roads heading home. Any must rides? Must sees? Must eats? Plan on two days between Sacramento and home.
