Astoria 57-97

Rode down to Astoria yesterday.

Took 5 south just to get going.

Was able to do almost 80mph the whole way without much trouble. I'd say the speed of traffic was about 70-75 and so I was just strolling past cars, which is what I like to do.

Missed my turnoff, got lost in thought and was almost to Portland before I realized I was supposed to turn at Longview.

It was around 80 degrees on I5. Not too bad at all.

Aside: stopped at Starbucks because desperate for coffee and had a "Nitro" which I learned about from the guy in front of me in line. I asked the cashier what he had ordered and she gave me a sample. It is actually OK, if a bit strong. Not sweet though, which is nice. Worth a try, but beware - caffeine.

Highway 30 to Astoria is nice, but it was the most crowded part of the ride. All you can do is relax and watch the scenery.

Stopped along the river for a snack and a stretch. Found a nice place with a view and a bench.

In Astoria they were having some sort of clam festival, so - traffic./crowds. I got gas and kept right on going, across the bridge.

On the Washington side of the bridge it was 57 degrees. Up near Shelton it was 97 degrees. I saw a 40 degree range of temperatures.

Once I got going on 101 North it was wide open and a beautiful ride.

The Connie is made for this trip, and the entire way I was giddy and laughing. "This bike ROCKS!"

I love that bike. Seriously. Comfortable. Capable. It turns 3500 rpm at 80mph and gets 44 mpg at that speed. It handles as well as a bike of that size can handle. I freaking love that bike more the more i ride it. If you ever wanted one, all I can say is - get it.

Edit: another aside: you can barely see it in the image, but I have a Pelican Case installed on my rear rack. It is small, about the size of a pistol case. It is the most-used luggage section on the bike. I carry wallet and cellphone and sunglasses and earplugs and keys and some bug-wipes in there. Basically it carries everything you'd put in your pockets. It is tough as nails, secure, and easy-peasy to use. It is a total WIN mod and I recommend it for any bike with a rack. Easy to install and really invaluable. Just a great mod.

You can see it better in this pic:

Your bike is so ugly, it hurts my eyes. Better give it to me.

A few alternative routes, if you want to incorporate a few roads less traveled.
