Artist Point 8/25/19

Roads clean and clear, not many bumps or heaves or issues EXCEPT...we left at 6am and it rained/misted/fogged out until we were halfway back down the mountain on our way out. Once we got back down the the flats the sun had come out and roads were drying up. However looking back up the mountain, it was still covered in clouds.

With the roads wet and tires slipping and sliding, it was an uneventful slow march up and down. On the plus side, stopped at the Acme Diner on 9 on the way north for coffee and breakfast, and it was delicious. Highly recommend stopping in there.

At Artist Point itself, parking lot was light, lots of people hiking already. Walked around a couple little trails and the sun broke through for about 5 minutes, so much so that we even mentioned hey its clearing up! and then 30 seconds later clouds rolled in from both directions and visibility was down to 10 yards.

On the positive side, on our way down, there was just a constant stream of traffic headed up the mountain. If we had left later it would have been truly miserable instead of the kinda miserable that'll make for a funny story later.

There was one spot of one lane road for some bridge work but otherwise it was clear.

Worth going up, just wish it was dry. It's absolutely gorgeous though so going slow wasn't the worst, got more time to look around.

I see so many motorcycle and bicycle riders who get up to the parking lot. Look around a few minutes. Use the toilet...and then head back down. It was good to see that you did some hiking.

For anyone not familiar with Artist Point, there are two trails worth sticking around for. As you enter the rectangular parking lot, there's a trail in the upper right corner that takes you to spectacular views of Mt. Shuksan. If you go on the Ptarmigan Ridge trail in the lower right corner, it takes you out to Mt. Baker.

Both trails have about as much elevation gain as you'd get in walking up a flight of stairs. You're up on ridge lines that on other trails will take you 1500-2000 ft of elevation gain to get to...and you get to ride up there instead.

I've ridden up to Artist Point three time in one summer. It's always on my summer bucket list. In the early summer (after it opens!), you'll find snow still there. The blue in those pools of water with the snow under them is incredible. Later in the summer, it is just gorgeous. And when the fall comes (before the snow!), the colors of autumn make it worth seeing once again.

I'll see if I can help out. I tried from my phone, but no joy.

Note the road... There are corners there with a 15 mph cautionary speed. I don't see how you can do that. They are so tight the trick is to keep from stalling the bike while you slip the clutch to get up to speed again.

This is where I ate my lunch.

How's that?
