Abbotsford 2019

Rode the Guzzi California 1400 to the airshow in Abbotsford. As a high schooler Dad took us up there a couple of times, and as airshows go, it was a good one.
Dave rode his Aprilia RSV1000 up from San Diego, and after a couple of days rest, we hit the road for our first overnight in Astoria. Thereafter we stayed in Port Angeles, Abbotsford for four nights, Winthrop, Coupeville, and finally Astoria again before returning to Salem.
Traffic in Victoria and Vancouver was horrendous. Shame, since they are otherwise such beautiful cities. Airshow in Abbotsford was a bit disappointing because of the crush of people (and poorly managed traffic), the small static display, the warbirds not being part of the static display, and the Thunderbirds being grounded due to the low cloud ceiling. Oh well, whaddaya gonna do?
Winthrop is a lovely gem of a town on the North Cascades Highway that I will want to show my wife. Reminds me of Sisters, OR, with the western storefronts and the wood boardwalks. And the North Cascades Highway is as good a ride as advertised - it just ends too soon!
Coupeville hasn't changed much since my hell-raising high school days - quiet, sleepy, good food to be had on the waterfront.
Riding the 101 along the Hood Canal was a pleasantly scenic surprise. As was dining at the water's edge watching bald eagles search for their next meals.
The Chevrons in BC all have 94 octane NON-ETHANOL! No need for StarTron in Canada.
We ended our trip the same way we started - with lunch at the Pelican Brew Pub in Pacific City on the Oregon coast. Good food in a fantastic setting. And the 3 Capes IPA is one of my favorites - even better on tap.

Next year, Revelstoke. Maybe Lake Louise.

Careful out there!

Thanks for the update on the AA. (Abbotsford Airshow). My dad and I used to fly in there and other shows back in the late 60's, early 70's when he worked with Art Scholl and Skip Volk. Really good memories. Now I might need to plan a ride in next year....even though it may not be as good as the old days.

I should have mentioned that the Canadian Snowbirds put on a real good show. The airplanes aren't as impressive as the Tbird F-16s, but those pilots know how to fly 'em! Same kind of maneuvers as the Tbirds, in slower red and white straight wing jets. Hard to find flaws in their execution.
And it was fun to see a couple of A-10 Warthogs up close, after seeing what those gatling guns can do on YouTube.

I used to fly with my dad renting Art Schollís airplanes out of Rialto airport. We flew to see the Voyager right after it landed at Edwards. My mom flew helis with Dorcey Wingo out of Rialto too. I had the pleasure of flying with Dorcey a few times. He once flew me to San Diego to set a telephone pole. We lived just a few houses down from Dorcey when the accident happened.

Much more than we think.
