Where To Recycle Coolant In Portland?

Got some old coolant. The auto parts store near me only takes oil. A place close to milwaukie/se portland would be nice. Thanks.

Any of the Metro transfer stations should be able to take it, but they will charge you $5.00 to do so. You may want to check Metro"s Site for a listing for coolant disposal.

That's actually what I ended up doing. It's not a problem for me, as I typically accrue hazmat over time, so once or twice a year, I make a run to the transfer station. However, if you use the search tool on Metro's recycling webpage, you may find another location that may take it for free.

I'm still surprised that Metro charges to take it. Portland tries to be all progressive and environmentally friendly, but they still do stupid crap like charging for coolant, which only encourages people to dump it down a storm drain or just toss it in their regular garbage can.

Agreed; but to be fair, there are Free Neighborhood HAZMAT Collection Events in the greater PDX area. Although, that could be a matter of time versus convenience for some folks.

Having said that, since I typically take my Hazmat in a consolidated load, the $5 is only a small inconvenience (for me at least).

Now if you want to talk about tire disposal, get ready to pay $12 for the first tire and $2 for each additional one at the metro transfer stations. There are better alternatives to be sure.
