Skyline / Bald Peak / Germantown are kinda douchebaggy rides

I did Skyline for the first time in a long time with Toshio leading most of the way (Mt. Washington --->Rock Creek Tavern) last night. I felt kind of like an asshole the whole way through. There was the "glare of death" from an older couple just trying to walk their dogs along the shoulder. There were cars...lots of cars. Private driveways...in many cases...every 50 yards or less.

Let me get to the punchline. It's a very dangerous place to ride with any gusto whatsoever and Toshio was rocking it pretty hard. I would recommend -10 (MPH) the whole way through. I'm sure the homeowners must hate these "Standing Rides" that run through their backyards every week all effing season long. Westside riders should stick to Vernonia/Tillamook runs...or more rural loops...IMHO. I'm sure I'll get flamed...but...but....we have the right...blah...blah...blah... You know what...sure...we all have the right to be assholes...Trump voters...what have you. Does not mean we should.

Really gives MC people the shit reputations that we richly deserve...in many cases.

Forest Park = place for walking dog
Skyline = place for riding/driving.

You're one of them.

People living on skyline being mad at bikes are kinda like that yahoo that moved next door to PIR and got mad at the noise.

I gotta agree with the author of the original post on this one...sure, it can be tempting to ride those roads, they're fairly nice overall, decent tarmac, nice sweepers, but if one really looks at the scene with some common sense, it's a very dangerous place to play. I hit a dog crossing the road up by Skyline Tavern back in 09, and haven't been back since. I also used to pedal quite a bit up there. Just too many users to be railin a bike..all it's gonna take is one fatality and it's game over for all..do yourself and your riding buddies a favor and avoid that area. I'm pretty sure the good folks who call that area home have been there (for the most part) longer than sport bike riders have been burnin fuel (up there).

Skyline is close to a lot of us. Vernonia not so much. It and its offshoots are nice roads at the speed limit and there are places you can wick it up. Not a place to rail. But if you are needing a twisty close-by road, Skyline is pretty much it.

And you can be surprised by dogs, cyclists, strollers, farm machinery, etc. on almost any rural road. Game over can happen anywhere on a moto. In fact, it may be more likely on remote roads where your guard may be down.

Far be it from me to tell anyone where/when/how to ride, just tryin to relay some experiences from up there. I've been pedaling/driving/biking that area since 1985, I've since moved south, but the draw is still there, obviously. I'm only suggesting that just because it's convenient, doesn't mean it should be the go-to twisty area. I think I'll disagree with Matt that Bald Peak is nasty, if one takes the back way (on the way down towards Newberg), it's a fun, fast little thrill ride. And you can always head down to Laurel of over to Gaston..nice little jaunts. I only say avoid Skyline because to me, there are too many negatives as opposed to the "closeness" of twisties. No worries, I agree to disagree, a rider has to get his/her ride on when ya have to get yer ride on..

Personally, I haven't done that route in awhile either, I tend to commute quite a bit, and ride the south Clackamas county roads. Silver Falls, Sublimity, Estacada, Ripplebrook. I find those challenging, fun, far enough away that they feel like real rides, yet close enough that they're not all-day, ass munching endeavors. S'all good, as long as I'm on two wheels, doin my thang, I'm a happy camper. Releases the tension, so to speak..

And yes, 14 does suck. Haven't ridden that since Mr Matt lost his life on it..its like a longer skyline..

I went on skyline for the first time a couple weekends ago after hearing so much about it. Wont be going back to the road thats for sure. Almost hit a dog, twice! Many blind residential driveways and lets not forget those spandex wearing granola munching cyclists that think it is okay to ride in the far left of the lane around a blind corner. Too hazardous, will stick to other roads.

Was your recent experience somehow different than the last time you road Skyline...? It's always been a busy road with a ton of bicyclists and slow drivers for the 8 years I've been in PDX.

I like Skyline. It's sketchier than some of the roads further out of town because of all the pedestrians/bicyclists/grannies/etc. but it's right there and easy to have fun on. It's the perfect backroad for me when 26 is a parking lot on my daily commute.

Like any road, ride within your limits and be prepared for unexpected obstacles. It's just a fact of life on a motorcycle, nothing new here...

Never seen a dog near the road in all my years there. I have come upon deer quite often.

I stopped reading the moment I read this:

In my honest opinion, any road can be ridden at the speed limit safely, and that includes the roads mentioned above.

I had to read it three times. I thought he said 10 mph over. Then I thought he said 10 mph under. Then the real meaning had me thinking hunh? You'd be rear ended by bicycles.

Welcome to the "new" Portland. More people = more traffic. Get use to it, cause it's only going to get worse. 😕 You say "fine, I'll just go rail a little further out". Think again. Use to be you could do Estacada to Detroit Lake and NEVER see enforcement. My last time up there was a Sheriff in a truck up near the summit before you drop down the hill 😞. The times, they are a changing.
