It's that time of year...

...when the arrival of Big Rain coincides, and assists, with the falling of the autum leaves. And suddenly every street is a frictionless deathtrap.

So just a reminder, brave year-round warriors: look at the road condition all the way through every turn. Riding in tire tracks won't help you: tire-pulped leaf mush is even worse than the leaves; it's like riding on cooked oatmeal. And it's going to hang around for at least 2-3 more months.

(Only time I ever laid a street bike down in my adult life was when it had gotten late during my commute about this time of year, I was tired and forgot to watch the road surface while I was leaned into a long curve and suddenly I was sliding down the road on my left shoulder at 30mph, thanks to leaf mush. Don't be me.)

Yupp.. it's the time of year to dirty up the ride. Wait a couple a days till some of the crap is washed away by the rain, stay out of the "ruts", stay away from the middle of your lane(s)(due to oil buildup), pass 53 footers quickly and decisively (due to the tire spray, which is brutal), buy some aftermarket lights if applicable, give yourself extra stopping distance to the cager in front of you, pay more attention to the schmuck behind you, check your tire pressure once a week, ahh fuck it. I'm staying in my truck. I wanna live to see spring time.

Tire selection for winter riding cannot be understated. Had a little unexpected drift in a sharp left hander today due to a variety of factors and attention to my actions wasnt one of them. I felt initially that I had slowed more than necessary to make the turn.

I feel more comfortable riding my Michelin PR4 equipped Busa in this shit than my OEM equipped KTM 690 because of the tires.

The big key here is SLOW DOWN.
Just, slow down. That is the biggest thing you can do to stay upright if you want to ride year round on ‘The wet side’ of the State. If you can not slow down and drive like an old person then by all means put the bike up until spring rather than crash.

Totally - had a little front slide on leaves yesterday morning, which wasn't ideal.

As a year-around commuter, one of the headaches is certainly chain maintenance, but I'll deal with that. Wet gear is another.

My lady friend bought me a boot/glove dryer for my office at work - its been awesome not to have damp gloves [especially] at the end of the day for the ride home. I do Nik wax my gear, but the wa-wa definitely gets there in the end.

If you do ride year around - the boot/glove dryer was pretty nice! Treat yourselves, if you cannot put it on Santa's list....

I've had one of these for a couple of years now; it's great!
