I like to include at least half if not all the WA-4 side. One way to do that is to enjoy the Longview->Cathlamet leg, which is for the most part spectacular, particularly on a sunny day, and even more particularly where it tracks the river's edge as it does for a while. Time it to arrive at Cathlamet at around 10 minutes before the hour, then have your $3 ready in your hot little hand and take the still spankin'-new Oscar B ferry to Westport: a really stunning if brief little cruise. And then the remainder on the OR-30 side which is at least decently pretty and twisty if a bit crowded.

Then do the reverse on the way back because Westport->Cathlamet is prettier in that direction, particularly crossing the bridge from Puget Island to the WA side, because you see the cliffs going that way.

The other option is to do the whole thing on the WA side. The roads are cleaner and emptier and there's a wilder feel to it... it wanders away from the river for a while at the western end and is about 20 minutes longer, but it takes up the riverbank at the end and is -- I keep overusing this word -- spectacular again. And the Astoria-Megler crossing is, yes, okay, I'll stop saying it.

I haven't been out WA-4, I'll need to check it out. Sounds scenic but today's ride will be on the more technical side. Maybe we'll loop through WA on the return trip and drop down via the ferry

Last weekend we came back on WA-14 from Carson, that was a pretty nice road! I didn't realize how much elevation you gained overlooking the Columbia.
