PSA: PDX Parking

Should have posted this when I first heard, but forgot.

Moto parking near the front of the airport is short term only (<7 days). If there longer than 7 days, use the long term parking area - else risk being towed.

I travel for work a few times a month, so I utilize the free parking at the airport quite often.

I typically fly out early in the week, and come back before the weekend. There is usually no problem finding parking in the Motorcycle parking area near the Arrivals pick-up area. I don't do a hard count, but by looking around at least 30-50% of the spots are usually open when I leave Mon/Tues mornings from the airport.

This past Tuesday, as I pulled into the parking area around 0500, there were TWO parking spots left (out of maybe 50??). A Portland police officer was there, directing me to one of the two spots. He politely informed me that if I should come back within 7 days to avoid my bike being towed. I told him I would only be gone for 3 days.

He had a clip board and was writing down license plate numbers.

When I came back Thursday night (2100), there was another guy (in plain clothes) with a clipboard again, checking license plates.

I don't know if this is something they have always been doing, or just something they are now enforcing. The police officer on Tuesday told me that lately the lot seems to never get as empty as it used to during slow time (mid week).

He told me there is a motorcycle area in long term parking (also free) and one would use the shuttle to get to the terminal. I have never used that area myself.

I would hate for someone's bike to get towed. If not for the clipboards, I would have probably dismissed this event. But someone is spending time actively, and frequently tracking the bikes that park there. I presume they're serious about this.

Good to know... I have parked my bike there several times, just seems like the easiest way to fly out of pdx is to ride your motorcycle there! I left mine there for two weeks once with no issues... It seems things have changed... Good to know about the one week rule. Is long term parking free for motorcycles, too?
