Nah, the problem is people don't finish it. "I could care less... but it'd be difficult."

As far as cuttin fingers off..uh, prolly not. Since I will assume that you and the others that agree with you are rational, compassionate, intelligent human beings, why would one think that cutting off ones fingers and then suggesting a new career path are compatible? If you only have 9, or 8 fingers, what kind of work could you find to support yourself and any significant others? Could you do your job with 9 fingers? I'm not sayin you're wrong for comin up with an idea on how to solve the crime/lack of respect problem(s), in this country right now, but would a policy of removing body parts really be a viable solution? I thought not.

Hell, why not take it a step further and start executing convicted murderers on pay-per-view and donating the proceeds to the victims? How about we figure out why the NEED to steal in the first place, address that, and help the poor dude (or female, in this case), to get and stay on their feet. Seems a bit more beneficial to all involved to me. Better than having the recipient of said removal being on the public dole for the rest of their lives...Just sayin.

having had the opportunity to spend some time with thieves and crooks I got a good look from the "inside" of crime and criminals...sad to say that criminals are born that way...not to say that everyone who ends up committing a crime was born that way..but there is a percentage that are...one of the most common phrases heard behind the bars is "I know what mistake I made and I won't make it again"...that does not mean quitting their crime..it means perfecting it...the second most common had to do with not having a fall guy..aka partner...if everything was free there would still be people who would steal stuff from other people...
if there was some sort of empirical proof that cutting off body parts worked as a deterrent to crime we would still be using it...simply put..the death penalty has never stopped murder..nor will it...our prisons are full of people who knew they were committing crimes when they committed them...some of them enjoy that aspect of crime...

I'm very familiar with the inner workings of a jail and have lots of stories to tell. Yup, there are all types of people in jails and prisons and I know exactly what "I won't make that mistake again" means depending on who's saying it. However, putting a bullet in the back of the head of a convicted murderer, rapist, or other shitbag will absolutely prevent them from doing their crimes again. The problem with our society is that criminals like to avoid responsibility and we come up with all kinds of excuses for them...ideological liberals especially. Most of those liberals have never been a victim of a violent crime themselves or had a family member hurt by one. Although it'll never happen in the US due to our constitution, I'd like to see more cost effective punitive justice. I'd love to see pay-per-view for capitol punishment as well, with a majority of the proceeds going to the victim or victims family. Hell, we already have violent shit that people are willing to pay to see...

UBI. That's the buzz-acronym to keep your eye(s) on. Universal Basic Income. It's being guinea pigged in Stockton CA as we speak. That is a start in the right direction, IMHO. Gigantic, too-big-to-fail tech company's (think Facebook, Google, Twitter, etc), are actually financially sponsoring this idea. Billionaire's such as Zuckerbrook and Branson of Virgin are supporters also. Forward thinking economists are on board as well. It's inevitable. The wage gap in ever increasing and someone has to step up to the plate and come up with new ideas. If the people who work for you can't afford their own products, where does that leave the manufacturer?
Of course, people will always steal. It's a rush. Peeps be lookin for adrenaline rushes all the time, hell, that's why most of ride, right? It is what it is. Just don't think that cutting off appendages is the way to punish these people. That's a slippery slope, my friend.

This is awesome libertarian idea, quite old, actually. It works only if accompanied by closing all the welfare agencies and firing their workers.

My criminal law professor make an interesting point that in Victorian England, when they had public hanging of thieves, there was a surge in pickpocketing, at the hanging.

So while one pickpocket was being hanged, and the crowd was having a good old time, all the other pickpockets were working the crowd. So the punishment, death, wasn't really a deterrent. Well except for the one hanged, they didn't reoffend.
