PDX to Mt. St Helens -- suggestions?

Somewhat new to the area and I don't have a bike out here yet, but I've been feeling the itch for too long and was going to rent something for a day and take a ride up to see Mt. St Helens. Wondering if any of you wonderful folk have suggestions for that ride e.g. which route to take, any good chow along the way, bad roads to avoid, etc.

Also, if you're interested, I might do this trip next week some point, maybe next Sunday?

Thanks in advance!

Roads to St Helens are just opening - Windy Ridge (FR-99 is closed until mid August for repair.
What type of bike are you wanting to rent?

When open - Carson to Windy Ridge is awesome, BUT usually not the best pavement.
Johnston Ridge is open (West Side of St Helens) just stay off of I-5 and you can have fun getting there.

I know there's a few rental spots around, but I'm thinking I'll just stick with Eagle Rider in Milwaulkie because I used them in Denver before (even though the experience kind of sucked). They have a Tiger 800 (not sure the exact option code) and a BMW R1200GS ($60/day more). Was thinking about the BMW because it should have a radio and I rode an RT once that was very, very comfortable and fun.

most of the good roads are on the south side. From Woodland, head east on SR503 into Cougar. Stop for gas and some good Pie in Cougar

Head up the mountain towards Pine Creek Ranger station. from there you can turn off to head toward the Mclellan View Point and down into Carson, WA and back into the gorge

Or you can continue North and go up towards Windy Ridge or all the way to HWY 12 and come around the north side of the mountain (south side of Mt Ranier)

Jonston Ridge is a great road to get to the North side and the Iconic viewpoint (if its not hidden by clouds) but only one way up and one way down.

I don't recommend riding a bike up there today though.
