I've been known to get involved but I haven't yet on this one...

I used to be involved with the DNR as an active citizen and went to all the user meetings up here. I/we never got anywhere on the issue of having no open riding area in Whatcom county, but I personally helped rain fire on their office when they tried to close Walker Valley. I can tell you, it worked! They changed their minds in a hurry.
More recent, I also worked to get the bill on road legal dirt bikes into law by calling and writing and urging others to do as well.

Get enough pissed-off motorcycle riders and they can make some serious noise down in Olympia. The pen might be mightier than the sword, but the deluge of telephone calls just may be the most effective of tools!

I hope one or both of these pass. It would be nice to have the road designations (50 mph speed limit and above) lowered in the Senate bill, but I don't know if that will happen.

I wrote my Senator (Alan Olsen) and Rep. (Mark Meek) about both bills this week. Rep. Meek returned my email within 6 hours, and asked me my opinion of the senate bill - to which I replied. Nothing from Sen. Olsen yet.

Last year, I lobbied as well - same deal - Representative returned emails , Senator not.

Even getting it passed in its present form would be a win, it's a foot in the door and would probably be easier to incrementally loosen the restrictions after getting the basic law in place.

I totally agree. The passage of either would help a lot - I'm a daily commuter with the GS, and spend entirely too much time sitting in traffic.

My hope is that ODOT doesn't so stridently oppose these bills as they did with last year's.

When / if it does pass, just be vigilant for crazies, particularly at first, when a lot of people won't be aware of the new law. I've had drivers attempt vehicular assault in retaliation just for my having passed them legally a mile or so back; taking advantage of a capability they lack entirely is going to cause epic screaming shit-flippage.

Couldn't agree more with that sentiment...the cagers are grumpy out there and wanna take it out on someone. They hate it when a two wheeler drops em like a bad habit, specially in close quarters, like we on 2wheels aren't allowed to exploit the fact that we have the cajones to deal with the weather, the cell phone addicted cagers, the LEO's, the distractions, etc etc. I get the feeling that if a "lane share" bill passes, cagers won't care, they'll honk and continue to swerve in their lanes as if they own them. They'll flip us off, cut us off and generally behave like the enclosed elitist's that they are. Fuck em. I love dropping idiots with an exhaust blast or a nice "clap", they really hate that. Give em some that gets the blood boiling for some reason. Whatever...

I just go on my merry way, minding my own bizness..if someone wants to play and the situation appears favorable, whoosh, i'm gone. Not a damn thing a cager can do about it. Unless of course you find yourself mashin gears with a red neck Dale Earnhardt wanna be in an R32 VW...I give that guy lotsa room...know what I mean? That ass clown aint worth dyin for..gotta go people...places to go and fuel to burn...

Did a quick check on the two bills today. Both are "in committee," but neither has a date for debate and/or consideration at this point. To check these:

1. House committee (HB 2665):

2. Senate committee (SB 385):

I'll look at these from time to time as I remember to do so, and let the crowd know what I see. The vice chair of the House committee (Mark Meek) has written me back a couple of times [encouragingly], so I hope he'll let me know when the bill gets brought up, although he did not say he would do so.

Anyway, fingers crossed. To have either (or both - dare to dream!) pass would be rather kickass...or, at least a bit of an improvement for we daily motorbike commuters.

It passed the Senate rather easily last time around, so I imagine it will again. ODOT killed it in the House last time. Somebody needs to remind these pompous jerks that they work for us and ODOT needs to stop trying to influence policy.

I agree - ODOT was entirely too strident last year and (as usual) unwilling to listen to folks who actually ride.

So this would explain why my ears were burning.

I have not been on here in a while so updates:

We just had our hearing on HB 2598 (Amends Vehicular Assault Statute to add motorcyclists and their passengers to protected class) yesterday. We got crammed in with 3 other assault bills so we ended giving the short version but the crash victim testimony was moving. I expect this bill to get out of committee and to the House floor soon (we have the Judiciary Chair and Co-chair as sponsors).

I expect the hearing on SB 385 to be in less than two weeks (I don't want to publicize the date until it is public). We will have stronger opposition this time but we do start in the same committee that passed us out last time that ended up getting us out of the full Senate.

I will post a thread on the forum once it is official with instructions on what to do.

Excellent. I hope ODOT doesn't make as much of a stink this year.
