Bummed to see the bill died again this year. Traffic is horrific and after traveling the world again this year for work, it's preposterous how everyone else on the globe filters yet we sit here in stopped traffic with tons of room between cars.

All for doing things the right way, this has been in talks for 6 years. We have some many Californians in state now, I'm frankly shocked that I don't see more bikes splitting. If everyone just started splitting, it'd be impossible to enforce.
My buddy on here got one. He posted about it on the previous page I think. 250 bucks was the ticket. I forget exactly what he said the ticket was.

Looking through Texas legislature web site it appears both these bills have ended up in their respective house transportation committees back in February. No further action....

It was a 250 dollar ticket for careless driving, and a talking to by the motorcycle cop about how dangerous it is. Easily could have been reckless and jail.

Thanks for the update. Wow. I have wondered about that, I suppose a cop really could just slap you with anything for splitting... careless, reckless, whatever. There's not a specific ticket for "lane splitting" eh?

Which leads me to my next question - could that be pretty easily fought by a lawyer in Oregon?

To what do they base their (subjective) opinion on whether it be reckless, careless or whatever? In the next state south where the practice is legal and widely practiced, and has been for years, would seem it might be the time for an attorney to get a precedent set for legalizing the move??? An attorney out there got an opinion on how this might work? Would seem one LEO opinion in Oregon vs. how many practicing LEOs in CA?

I don't think we were given a choice. Larry or Tod will be along soon to tell us for sure.

Forgive my naivete, but why wouldn't you want to carry insurance? I am old and I make no apologies for that but what I see these days are people using lawyers to bring lawsuits against nearly anyone and other people claiming no personal responsibility for anything.

I agree... I have full coverage on both my bikes that I own out right so insurance is not needed but I do anyway. Although for me (being over 50) my insurance is pretty cheap at 370 per year for both bikes through progressive + 3000 free in accessory insurance. IDK I kinda agree liability should be mandatory just as it is with cars. JMO don't flame me please.

I currently have 6 mc's and only ride 2 of them regularly. I keep very good insurance on both of those and have no desire to start/stop insurance on the other bikes I only ride on occasion. One of them is a little 125 supermoto that's really fun around town. I have very good medical coverage that takes care of any injuries I might sustain on the short little rides I might take on those. I'll probably sell a couple of them eventually, but in the meantime I'll now have to call my insurance co every time I want to start/stop insurance for the days I ride the rarely used bikes.

I believe it’s still ok not to have liability in Floriduh too. I feel riding driving anything with out is asking for trouble. Just imagine t-boning a new vette or better, an exotic. That alone could put a few of us into bankruptcy... For a couple hundo a year, it’s a no brainer. Plus some offer theft and towing (like mine) for next to nothing.

Have you looked into umbrella coverage?

I am 27. Rode without insurance for 11 years (started riding at 16) and about ~70k miles. Rear ended a SUV a few weeks ago in my first-ever accident. I have to pay out of pocket $3,347.

Worth it? Probably those premiums added up to more than what I will pay. But I should have been relieved getting out of that accident without major injuries - instead, I was worried about having done frame damage to this guy's car and financing a brand new one myself. I will never ride without insurance again.

Back to splitting - I did get a ticket in WA for it twice. They have an RCW for it: (RCW 46.61.608) “(3) No person shall operate a motorcycle between lanes of traffic or between adjacent lines or rows of vehicles.”

I think it was about $150? I haven't split in a while. At least I don't have to fear for my license like you might in OR.
