I don't think we were given a choice. Larry or Tod will be along soon to tell us for sure.

Forgive my naivete, but why wouldn't you want to carry insurance? I am old and I make no apologies for that but what I see these days are people using lawyers to bring lawsuits against nearly anyone and other people claiming no personal responsibility for anything.

I agree... I have full coverage on both my bikes that I own out right so insurance is not needed but I do anyway. Although for me (being over 50) my insurance is pretty cheap at 370 per year for both bikes through progressive + 3000 free in accessory insurance. IDK I kinda agree liability should be mandatory just as it is with cars. JMO don't flame me please.

I currently have 6 mc's and only ride 2 of them regularly. I keep very good insurance on both of those and have no desire to start/stop insurance on the other bikes I only ride on occasion. One of them is a little 125 supermoto that's really fun around town. I have very good medical coverage that takes care of any injuries I might sustain on the short little rides I might take on those. I'll probably sell a couple of them eventually, but in the meantime I'll now have to call my insurance co every time I want to start/stop insurance for the days I ride the rarely used bikes.

Have you looked into umbrella coverage?

I am 27. Rode without insurance for 11 years (started riding at 16) and about ~70k miles. Rear ended a SUV a few weeks ago in my first-ever accident. I have to pay out of pocket $3,347.

Worth it? Probably those premiums added up to more than what I will pay. But I should have been relieved getting out of that accident without major injuries - instead, I was worried about having done frame damage to this guy's car and financing a brand new one myself. I will never ride without insurance again.

Back to splitting - I did get a ticket in WA for it twice. They have an RCW for it: (RCW 46.61.608) “(3) No person shall operate a motorcycle between lanes of traffic or between adjacent lines or rows of vehicles.”

I think it was about $150? I haven't split in a while. At least I don't have to fear for my license like you might in OR.

I'm in the same boat with (right now) 7 in the stable. Do I mind having to make a phone call to cover them for a week or weekend? Absolutely not...as a previous poster said he had to pay $3K+ for an SUV a quick phone call to the insurance broker offers peace of mind should anything happen and I lose my meager retirement investments etc. How many of us could cash out or be happy making payments on a replacement cage for thousands of $$$?? A new or late model anything is at least $20K. I prefer to be able to sleep at night.....
