That wording checks all the right boxes. Lane sharing works best on freeways, where the speed limit is over 50 mph, unlike the Utah bill which limits lane sharing to roads with under 50 mph limit. These are the type of roads that are more likely to have other roads coming in from the side, shops and driveways, and other distractions that make lane sharing iffy.

I lane shared when I lived in Southern California and the wording of the proposed bill describes the safe way to do it.

Utah's bill is for filtering, not lane splitting. Important distinction that I think is more useful than splitting for now in WA.

The majority of us can get around the freeways in HOV and express lanes, but riding a bike on surface streets doesn't have a significant advantage. Living in San Diego for 6 years made me appreciate how much faster and safer you can get around town when you're at the front of every light.

Checking Oregon Legislative web site doesn't look like 2314 (Lane Sharing) is moving, anyone know differently? In Washington HB 1116 (M/C Safety), HB 1014 (Mandatory M/C Insurance) have moved to the Governors desk for signature. HB 1058 (M/C Parking) is still in the Senate Rules Committee awaiting action - call your senators...

There's a meeting of the Governor's Advisory Committee on Motorcycle Safety tomorrow where amendments to the Oregon bill will be explained and an effort to get their support, or at minimum, neutrality on it. Hopefully that itself will cause action in the committee, but there are other plans as well. Stay tuned, it is definitely not dead.

Ralgha, I attended the GAC meeting last week. The GAC voted 4-3 to adopt a neutral position towards the amended version of HB2314. That's good news!

(The new vote may seem unremarkable, but it's a significant shift from their 5-1 vote to oppose the initial version of HB2314.)

Senator Michael Dembrow attended the meeting gave testimony in support of the bill. He's one of the bill's Chief Sponsors, and has supported similar legislation for many years. Representative Karin Power (also a Chief Sponsor) also wrote a strong letter of support to the GAC. If you're a constituent of either one of these folks, email or phone them and thank them for their support! It just takes a minute but helps move the bill forward.

A reminder you can see a summary of the amendments here and the official amendment wording here.

Akdawg, to your point, while HB2314 isn't moving as fast as we'd like, there are a lot of people doing a lot of work 'behind the scenes' to keep it alive. We hope the change in the GAC's position bodes well.

Please stay tuned.

Thanks for you guys hard and steady work. I'm a Washingtonian and whatever you Oregonians can move, or vice versa, helps the cause!

So what was the final result for this bill? (Perhaps the OR legislature is still in session?). I rode down to the Bay Area last week and cheerfully took advantage of the option to lane split through jammed traffic there. It was great. Coming back through Portland today I encountered the normal slow traffic and wondered whether lane splitting will soon be legal in Oregon. Any developments?

Thanks.

Yesterday morning on I-84 saw a "brotherhood" specimen with the usual blackletter name on the the back of his vest giving lane-splitting a bad name by literally slaloming around moving cars on a Harley with open pipes, culminating in taking the 42nd Ave exit by whitelining to the left of the car in front of him and then sweeping to the right immediately in front its bumper to get on the ramp at the last second. Traffic was light for once. It was utterly gratuitous and fucking obnoxious.

The bill is still held up in committee. Several meetings over the next couple weeks to garner support to move it out of committee. The Oregon session goes until the end of June.

The bill remains stuck in Committee, but there's still time.

We need YOUR help, please, to get this bill out of committee. The more we can show that people want lane sharing to be legal, the better the chance that HB2314 will pass! Numbers really matter here.

As Ralgha mentioned, a team of volunteers will be having crucial meetings with Legislators in Salem the next two weeks. The Legislators are always more willing to support the bill when they’ve heard from their constituents – that’s you! The more recently they’ve been contacted, the better… so even if you’ve contacted them in the past, please do it again.

HOW: We've updated the “one click” tool on laneshareoregon.com. We’ve already written the email for you, and the addresses will auto-populate. The email will go to your State Senator and Representative. It’ll also go to key members of the Committee that HB2314 is in, and to the Speaker of the House.

Please do this today, your voice really makes a difference. Then ask a couple riding friends to do the same. Again, numbers matter here!

Even better, follow up your email with a call to your Senator and Representative. Tell anyone who answers (or voicemail) that you support HB2314 and you want to see it become law. Add as many of your own reasons as you like! Be supportive and assertive, but polite. Find their contact info by entering your address here: https://www.oregonlegislature.gov/Fi...districts.html

A related piece of good news about HB2314: last week Representative Gorsek joined as the bill's 21st sponsor.

If he's your Representative please tell him thanks!!
