Go Oregon! Washington currently has SB5254 Lane Sharing from ABATE of Washington. The bill as written isn't exactly what we want but the language is being amended. It was passed out of the Senate Transportation Committee with a "do pass" recommendation. Goes next to the Rules Committee. As Patrino says, stay in touch with your legislators, the more they hear from you the more likely things will pass.

Is it worth going to the hearing in person? What are the chances of having an opportunity to talk? Does going in person have more impact than submitting a written testimony?

Personal testimony, especially personal experiences are listened to carefully by the legislators. I've found that if you go to testify you will be heard, they make big effort to see that sign up are heard, though they may shorten testimony time to accommodate everyone. If you don't feel comfy speaking before the committees at least sign in as either pro or con and go to the hearing room. You will be amazed at what WSP trots out against our bills (biggest hurdle). No need to rehash reports and studies, ABATE has seen to it all these folks have that info in their hands. They do need to hear your stories. How you're alleviating traffic congestion, environmentally friendly, splitting for years and still alive etc etc. The fact that you would have taken the time to show up, especially if you are a constituent of theirs means a lot. Make calls to their office and send emails.

A bit unexpected coming in Utah! But, very welcome, and nice statistics used to further the cause.

Of course, some narrow minded redneck paranoid inbred idiot doesn't like it? Imagine that. He prolly has stock in some insurance company that is telling him what to think and say. Spineless wimp. Die already.

I did hear back from my Rep today. Part of his letter:

Finding ways of reducing road congestion, greenhouse emissions and creating safer roads is important to me. I will keep your feedback in mind if I get the opportunity to vote on HB 2314 or any bills related to lane splitting.

Thank you and please keep in touch,

Cool

Syringe, thanks for the update.

A reminder to everyone about next steps: the Joint Transportation Committee has a few options now:
* vote on the bill
* organize a working session
* let the bill 'die' in committee

We're monitoring things and will keep folks posted. If the bill moves forward (options #1 or #2 above) we'll need your help, and will let you know when & how.

Thanks for everyone's support on this. If you haven't already, please visit laneshareoregon.com for more info.

Thanks, Patrick

There are 5 states with Lane Splitting legislation before them. Washington, Oregon, Utah, Maryland and Connecticut. If you know folks in those states have them get to their legislators and support it. As one goes so go the rest.

I think the main problems are ODOT and Portland Police being so adamantly opposed to it. ODOT shouldn't even get a say in the matter, but I haven't figured out the best way to present that argument to the legislators.

Not to mention the Trucker's Association.

More puzzlingly, the Governor's Committee on Motorcycle Safety voted 4-1 against it! There's likely an agenda there, as two former members came to testify in favor.

On my commutes on 405 through Bellevue, WA. When I am zig zagging, I am looking for open space. Once I hit the 18 wheel tractor trailer and the Metro Bus side-by-side. I chill out.

The article makes it sound like you "HAVE" to split. Uggghh...I wish they would get comments from motos that would be like "Hey we are not stupid" Split when the opportunity is safe.
