Yeah, this is why we're not allowed to pump our own gas in Oregon.

once when I was around 14 a friend of my dad..who was a mechanic..came over to help me with a go-cart I had...some how some gas got split and there was a puddle there...he was smoking a cigarette and I got nervous and mentioned it..."oh this?" he said and promptly put it out in the gas...he mentioned some about the combustion temperature of the cigarette being lower than that of the gas...I've never tried to replicate this...

As a kid I used to see guys pull the float off of carburetors with lit cigarettes, none of them blew up and we didn't know that it would be considered very scary some day.

"The most commonly known flammable liquid is gasoline. It has a flash point of about -50 F (-65 C). The ignition temperature is about 495 F (232(232 C) [sic], a comparatively low figure."

------
"We performed a series of experiments in order to determine the actual temperature of the lit cigarette. Here are the results for the temperature at different locations and under different conditions:

Temperature without drawing:
Side of the lit portion: 400 deg C (or 752 deg F)
Middle of the lit portion: 580 deg C (or 1112 deg F)

Temperature during drawing:
Middle of the lit portion: 700 deg C (or 1292 deg F)

The above numbers represent the average we obtained by performing several trials and can be considered accurate to within 50 deg C. A standard Fe-CuNi digital thermocouple thermometer was used in all trials."

It's the vapor you should be concerned about. It has an auto-ignition temperature of 536F. My brother-in-law's grandfather was filling up a riding lawn mower while smoking.

Killed him.

I always thought the picture with the red robe from few years ago could not be beat, and it made me laugh every time. But yesterday it got beat and not in the best way. Apparently the guy got booked into jail for brandishing a weapon but released right away.

I for one am glad that Oregon mostly leans in favor of constitutional rights over property or property owner rights. People over property every time.

Glad he didn't end up shooting anyone. I can imagine dozens of bikes going through the alley would be loud and annoying, but it's only one day a year. No need to lose your sh*t over it...

We seem to have aggressive neighbors who reject the Keep Portland Weird moniker.
