Lightbulb 2017 Excitement!

Figured I'd share a little post, and hopefully encourage some people from our often-quiet Portland subforum to talk about upcoming plans for the new year. I was going to name this "2017 Outlook" but that sounded more like something you'd pay Microsoft for... (fyi hope the photos don't come out jumbo sized, not sure if they are or not »\_(ツ)_/» )

For starters, this has been quite a Winter. Just ask Trimet. I'm done with this shit especially the freezing rain. Not to mention getting stuck in a 2 hour, 2 mile commute and other fun-ventures.

I moved here in 2000 from the Bay Area with my family so I'm used to the frost and a lil ice here and there but this was a little much. On top of that there is still considerable gravel and numerous potholes around town.

A major update in my world as of Saturday: New Steel Horse! I am the new proud owner of a 2014 Triumph Daytona 675R (look how sexy it appears compared to my garbage cans!)

I was pretty set on a newer ZX-6R but the right deal came along, and as soon as a test drove it I'm glad I went with the Triumph. These things are very impressive, I think the stock exhaust even sounds great. Carbon Fiber bits, feature after feature, I mean c'mon! Supposedly they handle well, haven't gotten that far (see above weather complaining). I'm also adjusting to a more aggressively styled bike. I think the stiff suspension is more of a hangup for me, the ergo's I feel pretty good about even for being 6'3". I feel like I'm a little "on top" of the bike vs. "in" the bike but I've only racked about 60 miles so far. The stiff suspension feedback is going to take me some seat time to re-calibrate to.

I have roughly 3 years of riding under my belt, but the last year was my most productive skill development-wise. Year 1+ for me was basically putting around town, taking it into work or rolling over to friend's houses.

Here's a photo of my 1st bike and 2nd bike: 2006 Ninja 500R and a 2008 Yamaha FZ6 (This is when I just got the FZ6, before the 500R sold. Wish I could've gotten an FZ6 / Daytona pic, but that would super frickin illogical as the only reason to hold onto a bike you plan on selling). I like both these bikes, but really wanted to get something more capable and dead set on doing a few trackdays this year. I miss the Kawi green although that bike felt ancient (no changes since 96 or something). This is a significant picture for me because I realized this wasn't just a minor interest for me, rather something I really want to invest the time & money into.

So that leads me to my conclusion I guess?

-Winter go away I'm ready to ride!

-Planning on doing my first trackdays this year. I'm leaning towards doing a Moto Corsa 3-pack to take advantage of the price break. I don't really have means to trailer my bike to the track, so I would plan on riding there and doing prep work there. Sounds like this is fairly common or is it frowned upon? If someone has extra room (I'm over close to West Portland/Beaverton) I would be more than happy to pitch in on costs, etc. I've pieced together any track appropriate gear I was lacking over the winter, last item I need to pick up is a back protector.

-Excited for more Portland group rides. I've met several of you this last year & hopefully you recognize my dark blue FZ6. I appreciate the Wednesday & Thursday rides Chris & Lee organize, I owe these guys a beer.

-Hopefully Saturday and Sunday rides are more frequent this year, I may throw out some ideas

-Would be cool to connect to some other Triumph triple owners, I'm likely to check out a couple of the T.R.A.P. events

Nice read, and pictures, during the winter Blues. Great looking Triumph!

As far as doing a track day, find someone to transport your bike.

track days

Hi Greg,
If you are on the Westside come to Tuesday Night Coffee aka TNC at Ava's on Hall and 2nd in Beaverton 7 pm. This time of year is kinda slow but as it warms up there are more and more bikes.
There is a Thursday ride starting up later in the spring, meet at Chevron at Imbrie and Cornelius Pass, kick stands up at 6pm. Good routes and pace. Some slow some fast riders.

I have a trailer and hope to some track days this year.

Sounds good, I always forget about Tuesday Night Coffee I've never been. I am also a coffee drinker now to boot

If you make it over to Beaverton for TNC you should also check out Cascade Moto, about a mile to the west on Farmington Road. Great people and atmosphere. They have a club connected that has local rides and events as well.

They're planning a group ride down to the World of Speed Museum for a Cars & Coffee on March 25th. Lots of interesting cars show up and the museum is worth taking in too. There is a section inside that is dedicated to motorcycles. I don't know the departure and route details but someone there should be able to fill you in.
