Despite COVID-19 I am in for a day ride. I bought a '17 FJR in Austin Texas in December and road it home in March. It will replace my 09 FJR which will soon be for sale. Nudge nudge hint hint.

I flew to Austin on March 3rd before many of us understood the significance of the virus. Within 10 days everything changed.

It really wasn't a great trip by any means. I had some ideas of things to see and do, including the Motorcycle Grand Tour of Texas, but I keep running into bad news unplanned events such as the fellow I was staying with learned he needed stints on March 5th. We planned on going to Big Bend National Park. Thankfully he got the stints and is recovering well but his life is forever changed with blood thinners etc and learning he has hardening of the arteries. I felt terrible about this.

It was fun to visit the Johnson Space Center and a friend in Lafayette Louisiana. I was going to ride with him but he couldn't get a day off due COVID-19 - he is an executive consultant at the University of Louisiana and the border was closing due to COVID-19.

I had plans to visit Barber Motorsport Museum near Birmingham Alabama. Crummy weather and the virus changed my plans and I hightailed it home via the coast. It became clear no more museums and minimize contact with humans. From Lafayette it was nine days home with a 1/2 day stop to visit a friend near Indio California.

My last sit down meal was in Monterrey California. I learned to be more flexible a good lesson learned.
The goal of the trip had a simpler goal now. Get home safely and quickly as possible. Simple was good an I made it home with no incidents.

After getting home on March 20 I cleaned up the new motorcycle and made some improvements. Last week was my first local trip on the '17 FJR. The wife went with me. I road more cautiously than usual as I don't want to be in the emergency room. Along with way there I noticed a few things.

A parking lot serving a hiking trail was jammed - usually there are 3 or 4 cars tops. The trails are not social distance friendly. There were a lot of bicyclist along Valley Chapel Road - I used to cycle on roads but quit 30 years ago due to safety concerns. I feel much safer on a motorcycle where I don't impede traffic. On the way home we stopped at the local meat market where social distancing was difficult at best - I won't be back there until we get back to normal. (And I am sick and tire of people saying this is the new normal. How clichě. Remember AIDs in the '80s? It is but a distant memory these days.)

I am safer on my motorcycle than I am at the grocery store. How is that for odd? I have the means to sanitize the gas pump so I am in for a day ride.

SpokaneJim. I'm in Clarkston and next Tuesday was planning to ride up to Elk River. Might be a little far from Spokane, but an FJR covers a lot of ground. If available we could meet and ride some together, get a coffee, etc. Anyone and everyone is invited if you're got a day open. Weather looks good as of today.

Hate to see ya ride so far south. How about we meet at the tesoro gas station in Moscow, it's just as you leave Moscow going out towards Troy. Should take about an hour for each of us to get there. 10am okay?

Looks like a great route and a fun day. If you go into the Elk River cafe for some Huckleberry laced goodness, give the attack waitress on duty my best regards. Hope they still have the sign posted, "Many have eaten here, few have died."

Thanks for the huckleberry tip, sounds worthy of a stop. Curbside pie works for me. Should be a good day to give the Buell a little exercise, responsible exercise of coarse...
