Who won't you wave to?

Okay this is mean, but yesterday I had a couple of guys wave to me from Can-Am Spyders. I'm all "dude, that's not a motorcycle. It's a really stupid impractical car. We are not in the same club."

I think I relented and waved the second time. There are times when I'm driving a car and I give a wave to people on bikes and sometimes they get it and wave back. For some reason these guys are on three wheelers, but a friendly wave is a friendly wave, no point in sneering about it.

The sad thing is that I actually had to think about it to arrive at that point of view: by default I was a jerk. A life with too many assholes in it turns us from good natured kids into nasty sneering adults.

I actually wave at everyone on two or three wheels. Even scooters and cops. Kinda pisses me off when riders don't wave back.

When I first started riding some 30 years ago, pretty much everyone waved to everyone else. There were a few exceptions, but the ones who didn't were primarily MCers.

But as motorcycles have diversified and become more specialized, there has become more of a rift between the riding factions. And with that rift has.come fewer people waving at those outside their preferred faction. It's rather juvenile if you ask me.

only people on 2 wheels I don't wave at, Bicycles.... as for the Can-Am riders, I'll wave, maybe they feel steadier on 3 wheels or, have a medical condition that prevents them from riding on 2 wheels but still want that freedom, no offense to any Spider riders.

and trump, not waving at him.

the other day i saw some cops hiding beside the road with a laser near the narrows bridge. As I passed them I saw a rider going the other way headed toward the trap and so i gave them the "hat" sign. as the rider passed I saw that he was a cop. i laughed, wondering what he must have thought. like a minute later, here comes another rider headed towards the trap, so I gave him the "hat" sign: another cop. so I stopped.

I wave sometimes, depending on how i feel. less so in a divided highway with a median. i don't wave at these guys:

I actually got a wave from a cop on OR-30 the other day. They sometimes wave back but this was the first time I remember one going first. I had to look twice to be sure it wasn't one of those erzatz funeral escort riders, but nope, white R1200RT-P with "police" on it.

Aside: Back when I was commuting by motorcycle to the Greater Beaverton Techsprawl -- fortunately West in the morning and East in the evening, rather than the total-stoppage other way round -- I used to really appreciate that one cop who would pick off the Audis that would always attempt to follow my harebrained maneuvers rather than me. Always good for a laugh to see them get pulled over in my mirrors. It's like I was working for them as a bait rider: I'd inspire/enrage Mr. Race Car Driver In His Dreams by escaping a high-density clog to the clear air ahead, he'd attempt to follow me through my weave-split pattern in a vehicle that could not possibly do it at all, let alone safely, and Officer Friendly would pick up one for his quota. Easy peasy.

I'll wave at anybody on 2 or three wheeled vehicles, even bicyclists.

For the three wheeled people, I know a fellow rider that had knee surgery to fix one blown out in the military. He can't support the weight of a bike anymore so his husband bought him a spyder. That way he can still enjoy the open ride without having to drop his bike at every stop..
Motorbiker and Sentinel like this.

I wave at everybody.

On the Ural, other troikas get my three finger wave. Otherwise it's just a friendly hand wave.

Anybody speak Harley? I'm pretty sure some of those downward waves translate as "FU".

I ride many different styles of bikes. A cruiser is not one of them. I have quit waving to the Harley crowd unless they initiate. Nearly never get a response from the Hardly crowd no matter what I am riding in my collection.

I wave at all motorcyclists, period. Trikes count, too. Why not? At worst, they don't wave back, and you're a little bummed/butthurt about it. Maybe they just didn't see you because they were focused on something else. At best, they wave back and you feel good about the comradery.

I will wave at pretty much any motorized non-cage. I will admit though that sometimes I miss the other rider's wave cuz I'm too busy watching for ass-hats trying to kill me.

I wave at just about everyone. In rural areas I'll wave at everyone when I'm not on a bike.

Headed to Pullman on Sunday. I'll be the guy in the loaded Outback taking his daughter back to WSU waving at everyone. Gives me something to do to pass the time.

In my experience most everyone waves back.
