Race orgs should take a stand against shitty helmets. I once saw a Sparx helmet split in half during a race.

Icon passes the ECE and DOT safety certs. And there is a long running debate about Snell being better than ECE. I won’t buy Snell because they tend to be overbuilt and cause more concussions not less.

The track owners even admit it is not a scientifically arrived at exclusion, but a feeling based on anecdotal evidence. Maybe it is just typical Snell snobbery.

What are you basing your decision on regarding that helmet as junk? For a motorcycle helmet maybe, but as it's designed, a karting helmet, I'm not sure. The SNELL rating on that helmet is K2010. The motorcycle standard starts with M. If a karting organization chooses to recognize that helmet I won't argue as I don't have any clue as to their regs. Now if someone showed up at a track day with it I would agree it is not up to standard.

Just as a motorcycle helmet. I know nothing about karts.

It takes less force to cause a rotational concussion than a linear one. Maybe the aggressive shape of their helmets catch and rotate easier? I know arai has stuck with the boring looking round style for like 30 years because they’ve found it’s safest.

Thermoplastic lids are garbage (Icon)
The only helmets even worth a damn are anything with woven/weaves think carbon Kevlar-aramid these take impacts and reduce the them by "spiderwebbing" instead of splitting open
Lots of good info available re helmet structure/materials
Definitely a falsehood to think the price has ANYTHING to do with quality

Plastic either bounces or cracks open. Fiberglass diffuses impacts and gets crushed. This video has been played to death, but it's a textbook example of how a fiberglass shell will save your brain, when a plastic shell might've been good for just one of those impacts:

I'm going to stoke the internet fire and say that most riders aren't going 200mph and don't need a helmet to survive that kind of speed and impact where a DOT rated thermoplastic helmet has been shown to be more forgiving at lower speeds than a fiberglass composite. Of course this comes up regularly and something I think about every now and then.

99% of the whole helmet safety thing is simply that you are actually wearing a helmet, that fits, and is in good shape, and has either test rating.

The remaining 1% is just for internet sophistry.

From my reading, plastic is actually better than fiberglass or other woven materials. It gives and spreads impact while weaves don’t give. Helmets made of plastic usually show lower g force than weaves.

Maybe they have adjusted fiberglass helmets in the last few years to make them more forgiving.
